Children of Spanish-speaking Hispanic mothers spend less time in front of TV

Young children of Hispanic mothers whose dominant language is Spanish spend less time in front of the TV than children whose mothers speak mostly English, according to research led by investigators at Johns Hopkins Children's Center and published in the February issue of Archives of Pediatric & Adolescent Medicine.

Denim blue jeans ribbon campaign: an initiative to raise awareness about children with rare diseases

Hope – It's In Our Genes.™ The Children's Rare Disease Network (http://www.crdnetwork.org) today announced the Global Genes Project (http://www.globalgenesproject.org), an initiative designed to raise awareness about the prevalence of rare diseases that afflict millions of children worldwide. Rare disease advocates organizing the campaign selected a blue jeans denim ribbon as the international symbol of hope for children suffering from life threatening and chronically debilitating rare diseases.

Study analyzes relationship between parents' and children’s' dental visits

Whether or not children receive regular dental care is strongly associated with their parents' history of seeking dental care. A new report to appear in the journal Pediatrics, which has been released online, is the first to analyze the relationship between parents' and childrens' dental visits in a nationally represntative sample.

Charity festival raises more than $8M for underprivileged and at-risk children

Gavel to gavel, in only four hours, bidders at The Naples Winter Wine Festival charity auction raised more than $8 million for underprivileged and at-risk children. Five hundred patrons were seated under a giant tent set on the grand lawn of The Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort in Naples for the live auction, with winning bids ranging from $22,000 to $440,000 for 61 one-of-a-kind lots.

Children's Wish Foundation facilitates 12-year-old with genetic mitochondrial disease play international hockey

Gregory Herbert is a 12-year-old boy. He fell ill suddenly at the age of 10. Several organs were attacked, including his eyes, brain, kidneys and heart, by a genetic mitochondrial disease that is rather unknown to doctors. Thanks to the Children's Wish Foundation, Gregory will experience his fondest wish and participate in the Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament this February!

GMC's findings against Dr. Wakefield unjust and a threat to researchers investigating autism

Parents of children with autism around the world are calling the findings against Dr. Andrew Wakefield in the UK's General Medical Council (GMC) unjust and a threat to researchers investigating autism as a medical condition. The verdict comes less than a month after an article in the journal Pediatrics urged further study of a link between gastrointestinal disturbances and autism originally pointed out by Dr. Wakefield in 1988.

UCLA's non-invasive pre-surgical testing approach leads to seizure-free surgical outcome in TSC patients

When medication fails to control seizures in children with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC), a rare genetic disorder that affects multiple organ systems and frequently causes epilepsy, surgery to remove part of the brain is often necessary. But pre-surgical testing, which involves the implanting of electrodes into a child's head, can lead to longer hospital stays and greater risks from surgery.
