Swecure receives US patent approval for preventive allergy treatment

Swecure, a research and development stage biotechnology company primarily focused on developing novel treatments for immunoregulatory diseases such as allergy, IBD and IBS, receives patent approval grant by the US Patent and Trademark Office. The invention relates to a use of bacterial superantigens for the prevention of allergy in children as well as a method for the prevention of inflammatory disorders.

Mice lacking the protein retGC1, which is deficient in humans suffering Leber congenital amaurosis-1 (LCA1), a disorder that causes severe visual impairment beginning in infancy, received gene therapy to replace retGC1 and showed fully restored visual function that persisted for at least 6 months.

University of Huddersfield researchers develop new device to improve quality of care for young cancer patients

A DEVICE, developed through a collaboration by a team at the University of Huddersfield and a local charity, is set to improve the quality of care for child cancer patients. Medical practitioners and a dedicated charity have signalled that they are highly impressed by the design for a special harness, that safely and comfortably, contains the tubing inserted into the chests of youngsters during treatment.

Study shows lack of folic acid enrichment in Europe causes foaetal abnormalities

A new international study shows that 5,000 foetuses in Europe annually are affected by spina bifida and other severe defects on the central nervous system. Seventy per cent of these pregnancies are terminated, while increased mortality and serious diseases affect the children who are born. At least half of the cases can be avoided by adding folic acid to staple foods as is already being done in seventy non-European countries.

Study: Cervical pessary does not reduce preterm births, neonatal complications in twin pregnancies

Having twins accounts for only 1.5% of all births but 25% of preterm births, the leading cause of infant mortality worldwide. Successful strategies for reducing singleton preterm births include prophylactic use of progesterone and cervical cerclage in patients with a prior history of preterm birth.
