Parachute's Safe Kids Week 2013: Be alert. Be safe. Be aware of concussions

Twelve-year-old Nathan Fraser suffered a severe concussion during hockey practice in February 2012 when he tripped over a teammate diving for a puck and crashed head first into the ice and boards. Nathan's memory was wiped out, he lost five months of school and was so sensitive to sound and light he had to wear sunglasses and special earmuffs in his own home. After a long, slow recovery, Nathan and his family are now advocates for concussion prevention and awareness, a goal of Parachute's Safe Kids Week, May 27 to June 2.

Some types of families underrepresented in European health survey

Several scientific papers with results from one of Europe's largest health surveys of young children with focus on overweight and obesity, the IDEFICS study, have been published the last years. Research at the Nordic School of Public Health NHV reveals that some types of families seem to be underrepresented in the health survey. This knowledge can prove to be valuable when the data is interpreted and can contribute to efficient actions for improved child health.

Young people are demanding information and education about their bodies, sex, their sexuality and sexual health, as well as access to services that will support them to stay safe and healthy. Papers published in the latest themed issue of Reproductive Health Matters (RHM) demonstrate that information and services in fact remain unavailable to many young people, and many may grow up without fully understanding things that they are currently experiencing such as menstruation, let alone preparing themselves for future sexual relationships and adulthood.

A survey of almost 22,000 admitted patients at the University of Chicago Medical Center found patient preference to participate in decision making concerning their care was associated with a longer length of stay and higher total hospitalization costs, according to a report published online by JAMA Internal Medicine.
