Dr. David Blumenthal, MD, MPP, national coordinator for health information technology in the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology today announced an additional $12 million in new technical support assistance to help critical access hospitals and rural hospitals adopt and become meaningful users of certified health information technology.

Nearly one-half of U.S. adults who use the Internet participate in social networks. While these increasingly include health-focused networks, not much is known about their quality and safety. In one of the first formal studies of social networking websites targeting patients, researchers in the Children's Hospital Boston Informatics Program performed an in-depth evaluation of ten diabetes websites.

"Governor Scott is taking important steps to reduce wasteful spending in Medicaid, which is a big problem when it comes to pharmacy benefits. Because of its old-school 'fee-for-service' approach, Florida Medicaid pays drugstores much more than either Medicare or the commercial market pays them. Over the next decade, Florida could save $462 million - without cutting benefits, eligibility or payments to doctor and hospitals - simply by updating its approach to pharmacy benefits."

Canadian Diabetes Association releases Saskatchewan Diabetes Cost Model report

Today, the Canadian Diabetes Association released the findings from its Saskatchewan Diabetes Cost Model, indicating that Saskatchewan currently faces the highest combined prevalence of diabetes and prediabetes in the Prairies. The model shows that without action, the cost and prevalence of diabetes in the province will continue to increase substantially over the next 10 years.
