GlobalPost examines country ownership in GHI Rwanda program

As part of its special report "Healing the World," GlobalPost examines country ownership within the Global Health Initiative (GHI). The news service writes that Rwandan Health Minister Agnes Binagwaho told GlobalPost that a GHI focus on gender-based violence in Rwanda was a "curious" decision, which "she said ... wasn't a priority and no one had asked her if that fit in with the national plan."

As interest in global health rises in U.S., San Francisco stands at forefront of field

The San Francisco Chronicle reports on a growing interest in global health throughout the U.S. and how Jaime Sepulveda, who served as head of epidemiology in Mexico in the early 1980s and who took over the Global Health Sciences division at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) earlier this month, "hopes to make the Bay Area a powerhouse in research and development of global health policies worldwide."

Health workers key to 'effective health care delivery'

In addition to "essential money," "the right policies, government commitment and citizen accountability" are needed to decrease child mortality and improve other global health indicators, "but the sine qua non for effective health care delivery is health workers. Research presented today at the American Dietetic Association's (ADA) Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo (FNCE) demonstrates that potatoes are one of the best nutritional values in the produce department, providing significantly better nutritional value per dollar than most other raw vegetables.

Pakistan officials ask for international assistance as dengue fever outbreak overwhelms local resources

BBC News reports on a continuing outbreak of dengue fever in Pakistan's Punjab province, where "more than 8,000 cases of dengue fever have been reported in the province so far -- 7,000 in Lahore alone -- and the count continues to rise," according to the Punjab health department. According to the news service, "Doctors say more than 30 people have died of the fever so far" in the province, and "health officials estimate that more than 7,000 people are being tested daily for the virus -- 300 to 400 test positive each day".

Research roundup: Widows and medical spending; disparities in heart care, hospital deaths

The authors write: "We find that out-of-pocket medical spending is approximately 29 percent higher when an individual becomes widowed, a large portion of which is spending on nursing homes. Our results suggest a substantial role of living arrangements in out-of-pocket medical spending; however, our estimates combined with differences in rates of widowhood across gender suggest that marital status can explain only one third of the gender difference in total out-of-pocket medical spending, leaving a large portion unexplained.

Roundup: Patient dies after medical error during Calif. nurses strike; grocery workers ratify contract that had partially hinged on health care

Veteran nurses locked out of Alta Bates Summit Medical Center in Oakland said Sunday that the death of a patient due to a medical error by a replacement worker wouldn't have happened if they had been allowed to do their jobs. The hospital's management countered that it was a freak accident that could have happened at any time -- with or without the replacement nurses. At the center of the dispute is a cancer patient, a woman who has not been identified but whose tragic death on Saturday has inflamed an already tense labor dispute.
