Butte radiologist settles lawsuit against St. James Healthcare

Cole accepted a $4 million settlement in his lawsuit against St. James Healthcare and its parent corporation, the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Health Systems, Inc., a Kansas not-for-profit corporation (not to be confused with the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth religious community, a separate entity).

TFAH's new report on flu finds higher hospitalization rates among African Americans

H1N1 flu hospitalization rates for African-Americans, Hispanics, and American Indian/Alaska Natives were nearly two to one higher than rates for Whites during the 2009-2010 flu season, according to a new report, Fighting Flu Fatigue, from the Trust for America's Health (TFAH). At the same time, both H1N1 and seasonal flu vaccination rates were lower for African Americans and Hispanics than for Whites.

Many aspects of the German Genetic Diagnostics Act (Gendiagnostikgesetz) are out of touch with the latest technology, almost impossible to implement in clinical practice, or even detrimental to the success of recognised screening tests, such as newborn screening. Resistance exercise may promote better cardiovascular health

Resistance exercise (such as lifting weights) produces a different pattern of blood vessel responses than aerobic exercise, suggesting that it may have specific and important benefits for cardiovascular health, according to a study in the November issue of The Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, official research journal of the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

New Desktop medicine model helps physician to implement disease prevention

Gone are the days when a doctor's only way of helping patients is by treating the disease after symptoms have started. Instead, a new approach to medicine, called "Desktop Medicine" is emerging, in which the emphasis shifts from diagnosing diseases and treating symptoms to identifying risk-factors for medical conditions such as hypertension and osteoporosis, and intervening before they develop. The commentary appears in the current issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

University at Buffalo smoking cessation researchers applaud federal plans on new cigarette labeling

University at Buffalo smoking cessation researchers today applauded federal plans to require cigarette packs and ads to carry bigger, much more prominent and graphic health warnings, including images of the destruction to the lungs caused by tobacco, which must cover half of a cigarette pack. In announcing the initiative, the Health and Human Services Department called the new warnings "the most significant change in more than 25 years" in cigarette packages and advertising.

ESC emphasizes simple measures for diabetic patients to slow-down CVD progression

Diabetics can face a five times increase in the risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD) than non-diabetics. This leads to a seven to ten year reduction in life expectancy and a higher probability of suffering a fatal heart attack. These sad statistics have prompted the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) to mark World Diabetes Day on 14 November 2010 by emphasising the simple measures that diabetes patients should adopt to slow-down the progression of CVD and greatly improve their quality of life.
