HHS awards $4.8 million grant for Teen Prevention Education Program

The Princeton Center for Leadership Training (PCLT), in collaboration with long-time partner HiTOPS, was awarded a five-year, $4.8 million federal grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to replicate and evaluate a teen sexual health peer education program, known as the Teen Prevention Education Program (Teen PEP), in 16 high schools in rural North Carolina communities with high teen birth rates.

MSF calls for donor countries to improve food aid nutrition standards on eve of World Food Day

Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) released a statement in advance of Saturday's World Food Day saying that the "world's biggest donors of food aid ... continued to supply and fund nutritionally 'substandard' food to developing countries, despite scientific evidence showing it was of little value in reducing child malnutrition," Reuters AlertNet reports.

ACEP urges increased emergency medicine representation on National Commission on Children and Disasters

The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) today expressed concerns about a new report delivered to the White House and Congress by the National Commission on Children and Disasters. The organization urged the Commission to include more representation from emergency physicians, the group of physicians considered the experts in disaster preparedness, and emergency nurses who care for these victims.

New emergency care guidelines simplify performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and highlight the need for high quality CPR by addressing some of the barriers to performing CPR. The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, co-author of the 2010 Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC), released the guidelines today.

Ahead of a European Union ministers meeting in Brussels, Belguim, on Friday to address flood-relief for Pakistan, "Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton suggested European Union leaders should follow the U.S. and withhold further flood-relief funding from Pakistan until Islamabad shows it is doing more to fight corruption and collect tax revenue from its wealthiest citizens," the Wall Street Journal reports (Miller, 10/15).

Proposed 25% cut in tobacco taxes will cost Maine $96.2M in future health care costs

Declaring it an "irresponsible policy that will cost Maine millions in higher health care costs and weaken efforts to protect kids from smoking" the Tobacco-Free Kids Action Fund called on Republican gubernatorial candidate Paul LePage to stop supporting a proposed 25 percent cut in the state's tobacco tax.

ASTRO honors founder of The Oral Cancer Foundation

The American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) has named Brian Hill of Newport Beach, Calif., as its 2010 Survivor Circle Award winner. Hill will be recognized with a trophy and a $1,000 prize during the Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, November 2, 2010, during ASTRO's 52nd Annual Meeting in San Diego. He has chosen to donate the funds from the award to benefit The Oral Cancer Foundation, the nonprofit he started a decade ago.

The Washington Post reports on a new entity: the Board of Governors of the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute. "If you're not familiar with the board, you're not alone. Created by the health-care overhaul law, it's one of the newest and least known panels in government. But the work of its 21 members, if successful, could increase the public's knowledge of medical treatments for everything from attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder to cancer.

Electronic medical records aid reporting of drug problems, study finds

The Wall Street Journal reports that a recent small study finds that reporting of prescription side effects increases when doctors use computerized patient records. "The study, at Massachusetts General and Brigham & Women's hospitals in Boston and sponsored by Pfizer Inc., showed a large increase in reporting of adverse events to the Food and Drug Administration once doctors used an automated tool.
