Nine new institutions receive NIH Clinical and Translational Science Awards

Nine health research centers have received funds to develop ways to reduce the time it takes for clinical research to become treatments for patients. The funds were awarded as part of the Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) program which is led by the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR), part of the National Institutes of Health.

People with alcohol-related problems find comfort in speaking to clergy: Study

Persons with alcohol problems are finding comfort in speaking about their situation to clergy, a new study shows. Among 1,910 people with any alcohol-related problems, 14.7 percent said they used clergy services.The study, from researchers at the University of Michigan Health System and Saint Louis University, also indicates the majority of those who used services from clergy also used professional services at some point; only 0.5 percent used clergy services exclusively for their alcohol use-related problem.

High levels of mercury in fish can cause adverse health effects

Mercury levels in a popular species of game fish in Lake Erie are increasing after two decades of steady decline, scientists are reporting. The study, the most comprehensive to date on mercury levels in Great Lakes fish, is in ACS' Environmental Science & Technology, a semi-monthly journal.

MRI, University of Minnesota SPH enter agreement to further research collaboration

The Medica Research Institute (MRI) and the University of Minnesota School of Public Health (SPH) have entered into an agreement to jointly search for a senior director of the MRI who will also hold an adjunct faculty position at the SPH. The Medica Research Institute was established in January 2010 to conduct research that can be translated into activities that protect health and improve lives.

University of Louisville ophthalmology professor receives $60,000 RPB Special Scholar Award

Qingxian Lu, PhD, assistant professor of ophthalmology and visual sciences at the University of Louisville School of Medicine, has received the $60,000 William and Mary Greve Special Scholar Award from the Research to Prevent Blindness (RPB) organization. The funds will go toward Lu's research in retinitis pigmentosa, a group of genetic disorders that can lead to night blindness, loss of peripheral vision and total blindness.

Study reveals anti-diabetic properties of cashew seed extract

Cashew seed extract shows promise as an effective anti-diabetic, according to a new study from the University of Montreal (Canada) and the Universit- de Yaound- (Cameroun). Published in the journal Molecular Nutrition & Food Research, the investigation analyzed the reputed health benefits of cashew tree products on diabetes, notably whether cashew extracts could improve the body's response to its own insulin.

Children with highest levels of FeNO more likely to develop asthma: Study

Children with elevated levels of exhaled nitric oxide are at increased risk for developing asthma, particularly among children without a parental history of the disease, a study by US researchers at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California (USC) has found. The study is published ahead of print in the European Respiratory Journal.

A new study showed that Aboriginal smokers residing in remote communities have a significantly lower consumption of cigarettes than the rest of the population. The study was published in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health on Wednesday.

NIAID awards ATCC multimillion dollar MID-BRR contract

ATCC, the premier biological materials resource, services, and standards organization, has been awarded the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Biological Resource Repository ("MID-BRR") contract, ATCC announced today. The current value of the contract is $14,615,598 with the ultimate value of $115,733,409 over 7 years with an annual renewal.
