Biovest seeks EMA approval for BiovaxID to treat non-Hodgkin's lymphoma

Biovest International, Inc., a majority-owned subsidiary of Accentia Biopharmaceuticals, Inc., today reported milestone achievements advancing BiovaxID, Biovest's personalized cancer vaccine for the treatment of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, including a recently conducted regulatory meeting with the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the appointment of a key contributor to the Human Genome Project to its Scientific Advisory Board.

FDA approves Acton’s AEROSPAN sNDA to treat asthma

Acton Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the sNDA (Supplemental New Drug Application) for AEROSPAN (flunisolide HFA, 80 mcg) Inhalation Aerosol, a hydrofluoroalkane (HFA) orally inhaled corticosteroid indicated for the maintenance treatment of asthma as a prophylactic therapy in adult and pediatric patients 6 years of age and older.

First phase of Global Fund-managed AMFm shows success in bringing malaria drugs to clinics

The Affordable Medicines Facility-malaria (AMFm) -- an innovative financing mechanism that subsidizes the cost of artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) in order to expand access to the most effective treatment for malaria -- "brought more than 100 million doses of malaria drugs to clinics and pharmacies in 2011" and "also increased access to the top malaria medicines by 26 to 52 percent in six countries."

Study finds high levels of ESBL bacteria in Danish chicken meat

Nearly half of the samples from chicken meat imported into Denmark contain ESBL bacteria and for the first time the level is almost as high in Danish chicken meat. By contrast, the occurrence in Danish pigs has decreased significantly since farmers stopped using cephalosporins for pigs.

Boehringer Ingelheim files MAA with EMA for afatinib approval

Today, Boehringer Ingelheim has announced the submission of a Marketing Authorisation Application to the European Medicines Agency (EMA) for approval of afatinib, the first irreversible ErbB Family Blocker, as a treatment for patients with EGFR (ErbB1) mutation positive non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Afatinib has demonstrated unprecedented efficacy versus chemotherapy in the Phase III LUX-Lung 3 registration trial, which provides pivotal support for this submission.

According to the Guttmacher Institute, over ten million women in the US use oral contraceptives. Although birth control pills are an effective way to prevent pregnancy, keep acne at bay, and treat menstrual pain or irregularity, there may be some health concerns that are undisclosed to patients. A recent study suggests that oral contraceptive use can lead to increased pain during intercourse, with decreased libido and spontaneous arousability as well as diminished frequency of sexual intercourse and orgasm in young women.
