Fluoride chemicals added to public water supplies, boosts lead absorption in lab animals' bones, teeth and blood, report Sawan, et al. (Toxicology 2/2010). Earlier studies already show children's blood-lead-levels are higher in fluoridated communities, reports Sawan's research team.

Generic Focalin XR patent suit: Intellipharmaceutics International announces settlement

Intellipharmaceutics International Inc. today announced that Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation and Celgene Corporation have settled their patent suit in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey, and Elan Pharma International Ltd. has settled its patent suit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware, with Intellipharmaceutics Corp., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Intellipharmaceutics International, and its licensee Par Pharmaceutical, Inc. over a generic version of the Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder drug Focalin XR® (dexmethylphenidate hydrochloride).

New sensory tools for younger children

The recent results of the National Survey of Children's Health showed roughly 1 in 90 US children are affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Add to this the gamut of other disorders (Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD/ADHD), Anxiety disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), etc.) our children can be faced with, and it isn't surprising that an increasing number of special needs children are in our classrooms.

Anomalies causing motivational deficiencies may also cause ADHD

Until now, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) was related to alterations in the brain affecting attention and cognitive processes. Researchers at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and the Vall d'Hebron University Hospital for the first time have discovered anomalies in the brain's reward system related to the neural circuits of motivation and gratification. In children with ADHD, the degree of motivation when carrying out an activity is related to the immediacy with which the objectives of the activity are met. This would explain why their attention and hyperactivity levels differ depending on the tasks being carried out.

Positive results from Supernus Pharmaceuticals' SPN 810 Phase IIa trial for ADHD

Supernus Pharmaceuticals Inc., today announced that its Phase IIa U.S. clinical trial for SPN 810 in children with ADHD and persistent serious conduct problems met the primary endpoints of safety and tolerability, as well as showed statistically significant reduction versus baseline in conduct problems across all doses. The trial was initiated in 2009 and was a proof-of-concept, open-label study in children 6 to 12 years of age, assigned to one of four doses over a six-week treatment period, after 2-5 weeks' titration.
