‘Splash Away Cancer!’ swimming fundraiser slated for May 19

The 'Splash Away Cancer!' event will take place Saturday, May 19. The swimming fundraiser supports cancer research and patient care programs at The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center. The event is sponsored by the Lobo Aquatic Club, UNM Recreational Services and New Mexico Masters Swimming.

Nearly 50 people present with rare eye cancer - ocular melanoma

At least 50 people have been diagnosed with a rare type of eye cancer called ocular melanoma. They are all residents of two locations - Huntersville, North Carolina, and Auburn, Alabama. The cancer is rare and occurs in only six per 1 million population. The high rate of incidence of this cancer in these two locations has stumped researchers.

While physicians have long known that smog and pollution can bring on an asthma attack among children and adults suffering from asthma, researchers remained uncertain about what role long-term exposure to certain pollutants might play in the development of the disease in children.

Researchers develop novel theranostic procedure for treating ductal pancreatic adenocarcinoma

German researchers have developed a novel diagnostic and therapeutic (theranostic) procedure for patients with ductal pancreatic adenocarcinoma, a deadly cancer with an extremely poor prognosis (five-year survival rate of less than 5 percent) and limited treatment options. The study is featured in the May issue of The Journal of Nuclear Medicine.
