Adjuvant therapy after surgical removal of rare tumors may not provide survival benefit

Results of an analysis from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine show that additional therapy, or adjuvant therapy, delivered after surgical removal of a rare type of gastrointestinal tumor does not increase survival rates for patients.

Short bursts of exercise equally beneficial as concentrated regular activity finds research

Busy urban lives mean little time for regular physical activity and exercise. A new study has found that short bursts of exercise, if they add up to the total required exercise during the week, can reduce the risk of death. The study was published in the latest issue of the Journal of the American Heart Association.

Cancer screening procedures in Scotland more effective according to BBC newsreader George Alagiah

According to BBC newsreader George Alagiah, Scotland has better cancer screening procedures compared to England. Alagiah, a Sri Lankan born journalist, is 62 and is diagnosed with a stage 4 cancer of the bowel that relapsed little before Christmas. He says that his cancer would have been detected much earlier if he were being screened in Scotland rather than in England.

Research provides better understanding of how some cancer cells resist treatment

An international team of researchers led by Lucio Miele, MD, PhD, Professor and Chair of Genetics at LSU Health New Orleans School of Medicine, and Justin Stebbing, BM BCh MA, PhD, Professor of Cancer Medicine and Medical Oncology at Imperial College of Medicine in London, has found new genetic mutations that promote the survival of cancer cells.

Higher-dose RT does not improve survival but reduces recurrence risk for prostate cancer patients

Results of a recent NRG Oncology study, NRG Oncology/RTOG 0126, show that high-dose radiotherapy did not improve survival for men with intermediate-risk prostate cancer but did improve biochemical control and rates of distant metastases, when compared to standard radiotherapy.

Sébastien Février, reader at the University of Limoges and researcher at XLIM, and his team demonstrated that a bench-top, optical fiber-based laser source can be used to perform infrared spectromicroscopy with a precision rivaling, and in some regards even surpassing, that of experiments at large-scale synchrotron facilities.

Pittcon 2018, the 69th Conference and Exposition for Analytical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy, ended on March 1, in Orlando, Florida with an economic impact to the city estimated at $23 million. This global event brought together approximately 11,415 conferees and exhibitor personnel (official numbers to be released at the end of March).

Grilled meat could be raising the risk of hypertension finds study

Studies have shown that grilled meat including beef, poultry, fish etc. is usually cooked at high temperatures. This charring can produce cancer causing chemicals. In a new study researchers have found that consuming meat (both white and red) cooked over open flames or at high temperatures can lead to an increased risk of high blood pressure. These results were revealed this week at a meeting of the American Heart Association.

Non-Hodgkin lymphomas are cancers that affect white blood cells of the immune system called B-lymphocytes or B cells. Like cells in all cancers, the B cells begin to grow out of control, creating tumors in the lymph nodes, spleen or other tissues. In 2010 alone, it was estimated that non-Hodgkin lymphomas caused 210,000 deaths worldwide.
