Community-based program to focus on cancer care research and delivery

Metro Detroit area residents with cancer, and those throughout Michigan, will have access to federally-funded cancer research studies thanks to a five-year grant recently awarded to the Beaumont Cancer Institute. Beaumont Health System is one of 34 community sites participating in the National Cancer Institute's Community Oncology Research Program, also known as NCORP.

UChicago Medicine and Advocate Health Care wins NIH grant to find new ways to prevent type 1 diabetes

The University of Chicago Medicine and Advocate Children's Hospital / Advocate Health Care have received a five-year, $1.8-million grant from the National Institutes of Health to find new ways to delay and prevent type 1 diabetes. The grant will establish the first Type 1 Diabetes TrialNet Clinical Center in Chicago.

Oncothyreon Inc., a biotechnology company specializing in the development of innovative therapeutic products for the treatment of cancer, today announced that it has acquired Alpine Biosciences, Inc., of Seattle, Washington, a privately held biotechnology company developing protocells, a nanoparticle platform technology designed to enable the targeted delivery of multiple therapeutic agents, including nucleic acids, proteins, peptides and small molecules.

Antimalarial agent chloroquine normalizes abnormal tumor blood vessels

A recent study by investigators at VIB and KU Leuven has demonstrated that chloroquine also normalizes the abnormal blood vessels in tumors. This blood vessel normalization results in an increased barrier function on the one hand -- thereby blocking cancer cell dissemination and metastasis -- and in enhanced tumor perfusion on the other hand, which increases the response of the tumor to chemotherapy.

Inovio Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today reported financial results for the quarter ended June 30, 2014. Total revenue was $3.8 million and $6.2 million for the three and six months ended June 30, 2014, compared to $786,000 and $2.2 million for the same periods in 2013.

Avillion initiates BOSULIF Phase 3 trial in patients with chronic phase Ph+ CML

Avillion LLP, a co-developer of late-stage pharmaceutical assets, announces that the first patients have been dosed in the United States in a global Phase 3 clinical trial called "BFORE," which is designed to assess the effectiveness and safety of BOSULIF (bosutinib) as a first-line treatment for patients with chronic phase Philadelphia chromosome positive (Ph+) chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). The first patient was dosed on July 22, 2014.
