Recent clinical study sheds light on potential approach to more personalized care for pancreatic cancer

Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest cancers. Even with aggressive treatment, the prognosis is poor, with various factors stacking the odds against successful treatment: early detection is uncommon, it tends to spread quickly and recurrence is likely. However, several newer approaches show promise in increasing the response rate to pancreatic cancer treatment.

BCRF announces $58.6 million commitment to breast cancer research

The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, announced its dedication of $58.6 million to breast cancer research today at its annual Symposium & Awards Luncheon. Totaling $47 million, the 2014-2015 annual grants, awarded to more than 220 physicians and scientists on six continents, continue to fuel BCRF's mission of advancing the world's most innovative research.

NCCN publishes 20th annual editions of NCCN Guidelines for Colon and Rectal Cancers

The National Comprehensive Cancer Network has published the 20th annual editions of the NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology (NCCN Guidelines) for Colon and Rectal Cancers, two of the eight original NCCN Guidelines published in November 1996.

Grand Challenges Canada announces 11 seed grants to improve mental health in developing countries

On the day the world is collectively raising awareness on mental health issues, Grand Challenges Canada, funded by the Government of Canada, announced new funding for 11 novel ideas to improve mental health in developing countries, one of the biggest unmet needs of our time. Seed grants of up to $270,000 are awarded to 11 innovators from Canada and low- and middle-income countries, totalling $2.9 million CAD.

Walmart announced today that as of the beginning of next year it will be dropping health insurance for 30,000 employees who work less than 30 hours per week. Many liberals will react to the news by saying that it's just a profit-hungry corporation once again screwing over its employees. Conservatives are likely to say that this just shows what a mess Obamacare has created and why it should be repealed (Paul Waldman, 10/8).

Decaffeinated coffee may benefit liver health

Researchers from the National Cancer Institute report that decaffeinated coffee drinking may benefit liver health. Results of the study published in Hepatology, a journal of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, show that higher coffee consumption, regardless of caffeine content, was linked to lower levels of abnormal liver enzymes. This suggests that chemical compounds in coffee other than caffeine may help protect the liver.
