Researchers discover involvement of common gut bacterium in bowel cancer

New evidence that a common gut bacterium is involved in bowel cancer has been discovered by researchers from the Department of Physiology and Medical Physics in RCSI (Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland). The research is published in this month’s edition of the European Journal of Clinical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases.

Study: Obesity causes changes in colon that may lead to colorectal cancer

Obesity, rather than diet, causes changes in the colon that may lead to colorectal cancer, according to a study in mice by the National Institutes of Health. The finding bolsters the recommendation that calorie control and frequent exercise are not only key to a healthy lifestyle, but a strategy to lower the risk for colon cancer, the second leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States.

The Lancet Oncology has published results from the largest ever trial of a single melanoma treatment. The open label safety study was conducted to assess the tolerability of Zelboraf (vemurafenib), and featured 3,222 patients from across 44 countries.1 246 of these patients were from the UK.
