UNC receives grants from FDA and NIH to establish Tobacco Centers of Regulatory Science

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill received two separate grants from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the National Institutes of Health today as part of an on-going interagency partnership. UNC will house two of 14 Tobacco Centers of Regulatory Science, which are receiving a total of up to $53 million for tobacco-related research in fiscal year 2013.

'Creepy Uncle Sam' urges young to stay away from Obamacare

A Virginia-based conservative group backed by the billionaire Koch brothers launched a campaign this week urging young people to "opt-out" of the law's mandate that all Americans have health insurance. Their first ads feature young people going for doctor appointments, only to have a "Creepy Uncle Sam" pop up, ready to look them over.

Regular reminders improve preventative screening for primary care patients

Regular reminders for health care providers and patients to schedule preventative health screening tests and procedures resulted in improved provider performance in ordering overdue preventative screening for primary care patients, according to research published in the September special issue "Emerging Models of Care and Payment Delivery" of the Journal for Healthcare Quality, the peer-reviewed publication of the National Association for Healthcare Quality (NAHQ), www.nahq.org.

BEDA to launch National Weight Stigma Awareness Week to create awareness on weight stigma

The Binge Eating Disorder Association (BEDA) will launch its third annual National Weight Stigma Awareness Week (WSAW), September 23-27, 2013. This online event will help build awareness of what weight stigma is, the harmful effects weight stigma can have on people of all ages in all environments, and what can be done to stop it.

Phase III EINSTEIN trial program: XARELTO reduces risk of DVT and PE

Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced today a newly published, pooled analysis of the Phase III EINSTEIN trial program, showing XARELTO (rivaroxaban) is as effective as the standard of care in reducing the risk of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism in people with symptomatic DVT or PE, while reducing the incidence of major bleeding by 46 percent.
