Researchers discover key role of RAP1 gene in obesity

The discovery of an unexpected function for a gene that was associated to another process in the organism might be a solution in search of a problem, a clue to unsuspected connections. That is what has happened with RAP1, a gene that protects telomeres- the ends of chromosomes-after researchers from the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre surprisingly discovered its key role in obesity.

Abbott RealTime HCV Genotype II assay receives FDA approval

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today approved a test that identifies the genotype of hepatitis C virus that a patient is carrying. The Abbott RealTime HCV Genotype II, which can differentiate genotypes 1, 1a, 1b, 2, 3, 4, and 5,using a sample of an infected patient's blood plasma or serum, will aid health care professionals in determining the appropriate approach to treatment.

BerGenBio AS starts Phase 1 Clinical Trial for BGB324 oral AXL inhibitor

BerGenBio AS today announced the start of a Phase 1 Clinical Trial for BGB324, a first-in-class small molecule inhibitor of AXL tyrosine kinase. BGB324 is a highly selective, oral AXL inhibitor that blocks the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), which is a key driver of metastasis (cancer spread) and drug-resistance. The Phase 1 clinical trial of BGB324 is a single ascending dose study designed to evaluate the safety, tolerability, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of BGB324.

Researchers at Moffitt Cancer Center and colleagues at Louisiana State University have developed a method for identifying aggressive prostate cancers that require immediate therapy. It relies on understanding the genetic interaction between single nucleotide polymorphisms. The goal is to better predict a prostate cancer's aggressiveness to avoid unnecessary radical treatment.

AACE applauds the American Medical Association for recognizing obesity as disease state

The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) applauds the American Medical Association (AMA) House of Delegates for its action today to approve a resolution recognizing obesity as a disease state requiring a range of interventions to advance obesity treatment and prevention. AACE, the sponsor of the resolution, was joined by specialty and state medical societies in advocating for recognition of obesity as a disease state, including The Endocrine Society, American College of Cardiology, American College of Surgeons, American Urological Association, and the Texas State Delegation among many others.
