Researchers solve long-standing mystery behind dormant disseminated breast tumor cells

The long-standing mystery behind dormant disseminated breast tumor cells and what activates them after years and even decades of latency may have been solved. Researchers with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) have identified the microenvironment surrounding microvasculature - the small blood vessels that transport blood within tissues - as a niche where dormant cancer cells reside. When these blood vessels begin to sprout, the new tips produce molecules that transform dormant cancer cells into metastatic tumors.

Report: 83% of cancer doctors face oncology drug shortages

Eighty-three percent of cancer doctors report that they've faced oncology drug shortages, and of those, nearly all say that their patients' treatment has been impacted, according to a study from researchers at the Abramson Cancer Center and the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania that will be presented today at the 2013 annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (Abstract #CRA6510).

Study shows GreenLight laser therapy effective for BPH treatment

Data presented at the American Urological Association Annual Meeting demonstrate that treatment for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia with GreenLight XPS laser therapy with MoXy fiber, instead of transurethral resection of the prostate, results in significantly shorter hospitalization, catheterization, and recovery times for patients, while maintaining equivalent safety and efficacy.

Gene expression test measures risk of metastases in breast cancer patients

In Austria every year approx. 1,500 postmenopausal patients, that is, after the climacteric period, are affected by stage II breast cancer. This means that in these women tumour cells have already been found in the lymph nodes and that the risk of metastases appearing in the future course of the illness is significantly increased.
