The adult human circulatory system contains between 20 and 30 trillion red blood cells (RBCs), the precise size and number of which can vary from person to person. Some people may have fewer, but larger RBCs, while others may have a larger number of smaller RBCs. Although these differences in size and number may seem inconsequential, they raise an important question: Just what controls these characteristics of RBCs?

Eplerenone shown to reduce cumulative heart failure hospitalisations

Pfizer Inc. (NYSE: PFE) announced results from a new post-hoc analysis of the EMPHASIS-HF trial showing statistically significant reductions in rates of cumulative heart failure (HF) hospitalisations in patients with HF treated with eplerenone compared with placebo on a background of standard optimal therapy.1 The results were presented at The European Society of Cardiology Congress (ESC) in Munich.

Allegro Diagnostics today announced that results from its AEGIS (Airway Epithelium Gene Expression In the Diagnosis of Lung Cancer) clinical trials, to determine the accuracy of the BronchoGen genomic test, have been accepted for an oral presentation during the late-breaking abstract session at CHEST 2012 on Tuesday, October 23, 2012 at 4:30 p.m. The abstract will also be published in a supplement of the October 2012 issue of CHEST.
