Biovest receives Rapporteur and Co-Rapporteur designation for BiovaxID personalized cancer vaccine

Biovest International, Inc., a majority-owned subsidiary of Accentia Biopharmaceuticals, Inc., today announced that the European Medicines Agency (EMA) has notified Biovest regarding the official designation of the Rapporteur and Co-Rapporteur for BiovaxID, a personalized cancer vaccine for the treatment of follicular non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

FDA grants Senesco's SNS01-T orphan-drug designation to treat lymphomas

Senesco Technologies, Inc. reported today that it was informed on July 26th that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has granted orphan-drug designation for the company's lead drug candidate SNS01-T for treatment of both mantle cell lymphoma and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma.

Transgenomic, Inc. and the Medical College of Wisconsin today announced a collaboration agreement under which Transgenomic will offer next-generation genetic testing services performed at the MCW Clinical Sequencing Program. PSA testing and early detection may prevent 17,000 men each year from prostate cancer

A new analysis has found that doing away with PSA (prostate specific antigen) testing for prostate cancer would likely cause three times as many men to develop advanced disease that has spread to other parts of the body before being diagnosed. Published early online in CANCER, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society, the study suggests that PSA testing and early detection may prevent approximately 17,000 men each year from having such advanced prostate cancer at diagnosis.

Patients with plantar fasciitis (painful bone heel spur) experience significantly less pain and improved quality of life following a standard dose of external beam radiation therapy, a common cancer treatment similar to receiving an X-ray, according to a randomized, cooperative group study that was published online July 25, 2012, in the International Journal of Radiation, Oncology, Biology, Physics (Red Journal), the official scientific journal of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO).

Fruit flies help pinpoint genetic changes that spell cancer

By studying fruit flies, scientists at A*STAR's Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (IMCB) have successfully devised a fast and cost-saving way to uncover genetic changes that have a higher potential to cause cancer. With this new approach, researchers will now be able to rapidly distinguish the range of genetic changes that are causally linked to cancer (i.e. "driver" mutations) versus those with limited impact on cancer progression.

Results from HIV incidence study in Swaziland

The results from a nationally representative HIV incidence study in Swaziland indicate that the national rate of new HIV infections is 2.38% among adults ages 18-49. This figure, comparable to the 2009 UNAIDS estimate of 2.66% for Swaziland adults ages 15-49, suggests that the HIV epidemic in Swaziland may have begun to stabilize in the past few years.
