Ascepion, Debiopharm partner to develop and commercialize ASP-08126 for solid tumors

Debiopharm Group, a global biopharmaceutical development specialist that focuses on serious medical conditions and particularly oncology, and Ascepion Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a privately-held, biopharmaceutical company dedicated to the discovery and development of breakthrough small molecule drugs for the treatment of oncology and related diseases, have entered into an exclusive worldwide license agreement concerning the development and commercialization of ASP-08126 (called Debio 1144 by Debiopharm) a multikinase inhibitor currently in pre-clinical development.

Updated data from ARIAD’s ponatinib pivotal trial on CML or Ph+ ALL

ARIAD Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced updated clinical data from the pivotal PACE trial of its investigational pan-BCR-ABL inhibitor, ponatinib, in patients with chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) or Philadelphia-positive acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (Ph+ ALL), who are resistant or intolerant to dasatinib or nilotinib or who have the T315I mutation.

UW initiates enrollment in tosedostat phase II combination study for AML, MDS

Cell Therapeutics, Inc. today announced that the University of Washington has begun enrolling patients in a randomized phase II study testing the combination of tosedostat with either cytarabine or decitabine for elderly patients with newly-diagnosed acute myeloid leukemia ("AML") or high-risk myelodysplastic syndrome.

Tobacco cessation must be included as part of standard clinical care for cancer patients

While tobacco use can significantly hamper cancer treatment, few cancer researchers are incorporating tobacco assessment into their clinical studies. Stereotactic ablative radiotherapy benefits stage I non-small cell lung cancer patients

Until recently, many elderly patients with stage I non-small cell lung cancer were left untreated because treatment may not improve their quality of life. However, stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR) has become one of the standards of treatment for these patients. The outpatient treatment given over a two-week period allows frail patients to undergo the treatment.

Study reveals value of graphic warning labels on cigarette packaging

In a first of its kind study in the U.S., researchers at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania have shown that the addition of graphic warning labels on cigarette packaging can improve smokers' recall of the warning and health risks associated with smoking. The new findings are published online-first in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

Vitamin D and calcium are dietary requirements, but it's unclear how much is best for us. New draft findings by the United States Preventive Services Task Force conclude that for healthy, postmenopausal women, daily supplementation with low levels of vitamin D — up to 400 international units — combined with 1,000 milligrams of calcium, does not reduce fracture risk.
