Rare egg producing stem cells in women’s ovaries discovered

It was known till now that women were born with all the eggs they'll ever have. But now Harvard scientists have found that ovaries of young women harbor very rare stem cells capable of producing new eggs. The researchers feel that harnessing those stem cells might one day lead to better treatments for women left infertile because of disease or age.

Dendreon 2011 product revenue increases to $213.5M

Dendreon Corporation today reported results for the year and quarter ended December 31, 2011. Product revenue for the year ended December 31, 2011 was $213.5 million compared to $48 million for the year ended December 31, 2010. Product revenue for the fourth quarter of 2011 was $77 million compared to $25 million for the quarter ended December 31, 2010.

First patients in Germany treated with Delcath Hepatic CHEMOSAT Delivery System

Delcath Systems, Inc., announced today that the first patients in Germany have been treated with the Delcath Hepatic CHEMOSAT Delivery System at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Hospital, a premier European cancer treatment and research center located in Frankfurt. Study finds genetic variants that elevate risk for skin lesions in people exposed to arsenic

One of the first large-scale genomic studies conducted in a developing country has discovered genetic variants that elevate the risk for skin lesions in people chronically exposed to arsenic. Genetic changes found near the enzyme for metabolizing the chemical into a less toxic form can significantly increase an individual's risk for developing arsenic-related disease.
