SuperGen, Inc. today reported financial results for the second quarter ended June 30, 2011. The Company reported net income for the 2011 second quarter of $903,000, or $0.01 per basic and diluted share, compared with $961,000, or $0.02 per basic and diluted share, for the same prior year period.

Celldex second quarter net loss increases to $10.2 million

Celldex Therapeutics, Inc. today reported financial results for the second quarter ended June 30, 2011. Celldex reported a net loss of $10.2 million, or $0.27 per share, for the second quarter of 2011 compared to a net loss of $9.5 million, or $0.30 per share, for the second quarter of 2010.

Illumina and University of Oxford collaborate to sequence whole genomes

Illumina, Inc. today announced it will collaborate with the University of Oxford to sequence the whole genomes of 500 individuals afflicted with a range of life-threatening diseases that pose major challenges in diagnosis, treatment, and care. Illumina HiSeq™ 2000 systems will be used to generate sequence data for the 500 genomes.

Hospitalist care does not reduce overall costs: Study

Inpatients cared for by hospitalists have higher Medicare costs in the 30 days after discharge than those whose personal physicians oversee their care. This is partly because hospitalists' patients are more likely to be discharged to a rehabilitation or nursing facility than to their homes and more likely to have subsequent emergency room visits and readmissions.

Combination molecules with BRAF inhibitors may help overcome drug resistance in melanoma patients

About 50 to 60 percent of patients with melanoma have a mutation in the BRAF gene that drives the growth of their cancer. Most of these patients respond well to two novel agents being studied in clinical trials that inhibit the gene, with remarkable responses that are, unfortunately, almost always limited in duration.

They make up less than one-hundredth of 1 percent of the microbes that live in the colon, but the bacteria and archaea that sop up hydrogen in the gut are fundamental to colon health. In a new study, researchers take a first look at these "hydrogenotrophic" microbes, mapping where they live and how abundant they are in different parts of the lower intestine.
