Aflac announces $1.06 million scholarship awards for cancer research

Aflac, the company that helps employers enhance benefits offerings to employees, today announced it will donate a total of $1,060,000 to the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) to help defray the costs facing cancer researchers. The three-year scholarship awards focus on career development, scholar-in-training; a special program for high school students, and a task force on pediatric oncology.

Novel biomarker test accurately detects proteins secreted from asbestos-related tumors

Researchers investigating a novel biomarker test believe it is the most accurate yet in detecting proteins secreted from tumors caused by exposure to asbestos. Study results of this aptamer proteomic technology were presented at the AACR 102nd Annual Meeting 2011, held April 2-6.

Coronary computed tomographic angiography to evaluate acute chest pain reduces hospital admissions

Hospital admissions at Stony Brook University Medical Center on Long Island were significantly reduced when using coronary computed tomographic angiography (CCTA) to evaluate patients presenting in the emergency department (ED) with acute chest pain (ACP), according to research results presented during a scientific session at the American College of Cardiology's 60th Annual Scientific Session and Expo in New Orleans on April 3.

Pronto to distribute Signal's Myeloma Prognostic Risk Signature test in Israel

Signal Genetics, the parent company of Myeloma Health LLC, and Pronto Diagnostics Ltd, both of which are privately held predictive genetic testing companies focused on oncology, announced that they have entered into a Distribution Agreement whereby Pronto will be the exclusive representative and distributor for Signal's Myeloma Prognostic Risk Signature (MyPRS) test in Israel.

Daiichi Sankyo acquires Plexxikon

Plexxikon Inc. today announced that its acquisition by Daiichi Sankyo Company, Limited, a Japan-based global pharmaceutical company, has been successfully completed. Clearance under the Hart Scott Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act has been received. Under the terms of the deal, Plexxikon shareholders will receive $805 million up-front, with near-term milestone payments associated with the approval of PLX4032 totaling an additional $130 million.

Vermillion, Quest Diagnostics enter agreement to launch OVA1 IVDMIA assay in India

Vermillion, a molecular diagnostics company, today announced that it has signed an agreement with Quest Diagnostics to make OVA1 available in India. The companies are targeting a launch in the second quarter of 2011. Additionally, at the International Gynecologic Cancer Society (IGCS) regional meeting held in New Delhi April 2-3, 2011, Dr. Fred Ueland presented data demonstrating the high sensitivity for ovarian malignancy of OVA1 in combination with ultrasound.

People with lung cancer more likely to have high-risk forms of HPV antibodies

Researchers with the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) have found that people with lung cancer were significantly more likely to have several high-risk forms of human papillomavirus (HPV) antibodies compared to those who did not have lung cancer. These results, which were presented at the AACR 102nd Annual Meeting 2011, held April 2-6, indicate that HPV antibodies are substantially increased in people with lung cancer.
