Scientists are reporting discovery of a potential biochemical basis for the apparent cancer-fighting ability of broccoli and its veggie cousins. They found for the first time that certain substances in the vegetables appear to target and block a defective gene associated with cancer.

Hospira, Inc., the world leader in generic injectable pharmaceuticals, today announced U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval of docetaxel. The medication is a generic version of Sanofi-Aventis's Taxotere, and Hospira expects to launch the product later this month.

Older men have higher risk of melanoma: Australian study

Health experts warn that the rates of skin cancer – melanoma, is on the rise among elderly Victorians. This came out as new figures were released yesterday by Cancer Council Victoria that showed that Victorians aged over 55 accounted for two-thirds of melanoma diagnoses, and rural men were at highest risk. In 2008 a total of 2217 Victorians were diagnosed with melanoma and 279 people died. Skin cancer rates have increased by 400 per cent in the past 26 years among older males.

Keneally promises billions for hospital & healthcare upgrades

Hospital upgrades with more beds and an expansion of the nursing and medical workforce may be a reality in the near future thanks to the Keneally government’s $2.3 billion pitch. Premier Kristina Keneally pledged the total spending package of $4bn would deliver “improvements right across the health system” and give patients the care they needed, promptly. She spoke at the launch at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead in Sydney’s west saying, “This is about strengthening our health system to deal with challenges of an ageing population, growing levels of chronic disease and rising health costs.”
