Rush University awards $25 million contract to Siemens

Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, one of the top academic medical centers in the United States, has awarded a five-year, $25 million contract for medical equipment and health IT consulting services to Siemens Medical Solutions USA, Inc. With the addition of Siemens medical imaging equipment and software, Rush will become one of a select group of medical centers in the country incorporating the concept of an interventional platform within its facility.

Study finds association between KRAS p.G13D mutations and cetuximab treatment in colorectal cancer

Even though the cancer-treatment agent cetuximab is not considered effective treatment for KRAS (a gene)-mutated metastatic colorectal tumors, new research indicates that patients with colorectal cancer not responding to chemotherapy and a certain variation of this gene who were treated with cetuximab had longer overall and progression-free survival than patients with other KRAS-mutations, according to a study in the October 27 issue of JAMA.

ARIAD prices common stock public offering

ARIAD Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced today the pricing of an underwritten public offering of 16,000,000 shares of its common stock at $3.70 per share. The offering is expected to close on or about October 29, 2010, subject to customary closing conditions. In April 2008, Medicare changed reimbursement to cover up to 200 catheters per month, instead of the previous 4 that it covered.

Strativa enters amended agreement with Sobi for Nascobal Vitamin B12 Nasal Spray

Strativa Pharmaceuticals today announced that it has entered into an amended and restated license and supply agreement with Swedish Orphan Biovitrum (Sobi) covering the European development and commercialization rights of Strativa's Nascobal (cyanocobalamin) Vitamin B12 Nasal Spray. New findings could deliver low-cost method to extract anticancer compound

A popular cancer drug could be produced cheaply and sustainably using stem cells derived from trees, a study suggests. Researchers have isolated and grown stem cells from a yew tree whose bark is a natural source of the anticancer compound paclitaxel. The development could enable the compound to be produced on a commercial scale at low cost, with no harmful by-products.
