Researchers from the United States have said that there is strong evidence linking oral sex to cancer. They have urged more study of how human papillomaviruses may be to blame for a rise in oral cancer among white men.

Gene that causes rare breast cancer identified

Researchers have found that a rare but hard-to-treat form of breast cancer is driven by a newly discovered gene. The gene ZNF703 is the first oncogene to be discovered in five years, and it could lead to more effective treatments down the road, Cancer Research UK said.

Researchers have found that some individuals living in remote villages in Ecuador have a mutation that could throw light on human longevity and ways to increase it. These villagers, all dwarfs with heights less than three and a half feet, have a rare condition called Laron syndrome or Laron dwarfism.

Breast cancer cases on the rise in Japan

The number of women diagnosed with breast cancer per year in the seven major markets is forecast to increase by 13% over the next decade, finds independent healthcare analyst, Datamonitor.* However, in Japan, breast cancer incidence rates will rise by approximately 24% to 2019 to reach 56,400 cases, compared to 45,600 cases in 2010.

During the cold winter months, many also struggle with seasonal depression or “winter blues,” known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Salk receives $2 million gift to establish Endowed Chair in Vision Research

The Salk Institute for Biological Studies today announced a generous gift from Mr. Conrad Prebys, a Salk Trustee, to establish the Conrad T. Prebys Endowed Chair in Vision Research for Dr. Tom Albright. As part of their senior scientist endowed chair challenge, Joan and Irwin Jacobs will match the donor's gift with an additional $1,000,000 to establish the donor's named chair at $3,000,000.

With a new poll showing more than 70 per cent of British Columbians believe exposure to cosmetic pesticides increases their risk to cancer and threatens the environment, the Canadian Cancer Society wants all leadership candidates to pledge introduction of legislation banning cosmetic pesticides.

Predictive to present results on development of real-time multiplexed PCR FGFR3 assay at ASCO 2011

Predictive Biosciences today announced that the Company will be presenting results on the development of a real-time multiplexed PCR assay for detection of FGFR3 mutations in urine and tissue at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) 2011 Genitourinary Cancers Symposium being held February 17 - 19 in Orlando, Florida. Biologist investigates CAPV-EAE population for hereditary breast and ovary cancer

Between 5 % and 10 % of breast cancer cases are hereditary, arising because the patient inherits from the father or mother a mutation in a gene that is susceptible to causing the illness. BRCA1 and BRCA2 have already been identified as two of the genes to be monitored. It is estimated that 30 % of hereditary breast cancer cases are due to mutations in one of these two genes.

Genzyme Corporation today announced three-year follow-up data from patients enrolled in the phase 2 clinical trial for its investigational oral therapy for Gaucher disease type 1 known as eliglustat tartrate. Sustained or further improvements were observed across all endpoints, including bone disease, at the three-year timepoint.
