Case Western Reserve awarded $0.5M for study of breast cancer in older women

Cynthia Owusu, MD, associate professor at Case Western Reserve University and geriatric-oncologist at University Hospitals Case Medical Center, the School's primary affiliate, has received nearly $500,000 from Susan G. Komen For the Cure to fund a novel three-year study aimed at improving outcomes for older women with newly-diagnosed breast cancer.

LCA opens registration for next Team Lung Love event

Today, Lung Cancer Alliance (LCA) opened registration for the next Team Lung Love event. Members of Team Lung Love can participate in the Philadelphia Marathon, Half-Marathon and 8K this November. Team Lung Love is LCA's endurance sports training program is focused exclusively on raising awareness and support for lung cancer.

CytRx updates on progress in clinical development of bafetinib in three oncology indications

CytRx Corporation, a biopharmaceutical company specializing in oncology, announces progress with its clinical program to evaluate the preliminary efficacy and safety of its drug candidate bafetinib in three oncology indications. The Company has enrolled its first patient in a Phase 2 proof-of-concept trial in patients with high-risk B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (B-CLL), is reporting rapid advancement toward the initiation of a Phase 2 proof-of-concept trial in advanced prostate cancer, and is on track to begin clinical evaluation later this year in glioblastoma multiforme, a common and aggressive type of primary brain tumor.

Pfizer suspends chronic low back pain, diabetic peripheral neuropathy studies in tanezumab clinical program

Pfizer Inc. today announced, at the request of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the suspension of the chronic low back pain and painful diabetic peripheral neuropathy studies in the clinical program for the investigational compound tanezumab. Investigation of the compound continues in some areas of high unmet medical need, including cancer pain.

N.Y. health officials increase tanning regulations; Colo. extends review of premium increases; Some small Mass. businesses dropping coverage

The Associated Press: "New York health officials are ramping up their regulation of more than 2,000 tanning salons and gyms offering indoor ultraviolet rays even as health advocates push for a law banning exposure by anyone under 18. … Last year, the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer classified tanning as a definite human carcinogen, putting it in the same category as smoking.

ZIOPHARM Oncology commences palifosfamide Phase III clinical trial for metastatic soft tissue sarcoma

ZIOPHARM Oncology, Inc. today announced the initiation of the pivotal Phase III clinical trial for palifosfamide in patients with front-line metastatic soft tissue sarcoma. The study, called PICASSO 3, is an international, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial designed to enroll approximately 424 patients with metastatic soft tissue sarcoma who have never been treated with chemotherapy for metastatic disease.

Researchers discover new gene regulation, DNA behavior of breast cancer cells

Cancer researchers have discovered a previously unknown type of gene regulation and DNA behavior in breast cancer cells that may lead to better insight about environmental exposure to estrogen-like compounds. A new study, published in the journal Genome Research by researchers at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center-Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC-James), provides the first evidence that cells can regulate many genes at once by looping their DNA, contributing to cancer when it goes awry. In this study, the gene regulation was discovered in breast cancer cells as a response to the hormone estrogen and resulted in the silencing of 14 genes at one time.

Kidney disease is a growing public health problem, with approximately half a million individuals in the United States requiring dialysis treatments to replace the function of their failed kidneys.
