The Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation (SWCRF) has awarded 13 collaborative research grants and 3 individual research grants, totaling $1.54 million. The 16 grants represent a portion of the science grant program at the Foundation, which will award more than $2 million this year to cancer research.

Researchers awarded $3M grant to establish DC D-CFAR

Researchers from institutions across Washington, DC, led by Alan E. Greenberg, M.D., M.P.H., of The George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services, have been awarded an approximately $3M grant over five years from the National Institutes of Health to establish the District of Columbia Developmental Center for AIDS Research.

OSI Pharmaceuticals terminates Offer to Purchase 2% Convertible Senior Subordinated Notes due 2025

OSI Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced today that all of its 2% Convertible Senior Subordinated Notes due 2025 have been surrendered for conversion, as provided for in the Indenture governing the notes. As a result, no 2% Notes remain outstanding and the Company has terminated the Offer to Purchase the 2% Notes that the Company was required to make pursuant to Section 3.9 of the Indenture.

LSUHSC Professor awarded $2.1M grant to determine role of PCP

Dr. Jay Kolls, Professor and Chairman of Genetics at the LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans School of Medicine, has been awarded a $2.1 million grant over five years by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health to determine the role and identify which T-helper cells fight the opportunistic infection, Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, which can be a complication of HIV/AIDS.

Fredericksburg Oncology invites participants for new metastatic melanoma clinical trial

Fredericksburg Oncology is now accepting patients for a new clinical trial supported by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to evaluate treatment for metastatic (advanced stage) melanoma. The current trial, designed at the Mayo Clinic, combines chemotherapy with targeted molecular agents in an effort to improve control of this difficult disease, reports Dr. Frederick C. Tucker, Jr., who heads this practice.

Emotions play important role when certifying patients' terminal stage: Research

A research conducted at the University of Granada revealed that emotions play an important role when health professionals have to certify that a patient is in terminal stage. To the purpose of this research, a qualitative study was undertaken with a sample of 42 participants. Participants were thoroughly interviewed, with the aim of analyzing the approach and language employed by health professionals treating terminally-ill patients.
