Data shows potential health benefits of S-equol in relieving menopausal symptoms

The findings of a scientific conference examining the growing body of research and potential health benefits of S-equol were published this month in the Journal of Nutrition. Manuscripts based on presentations made at the conference, which was organized by the Life Sciences Research Office, reveal data that S-equol is a safe, natural and effective solution to providing relief of menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes and muscle discomfort.

Study shows association between obesity and GERD in children

Extremely obese children have a 40 percent higher risk of gastroesophageal reflux disease and children who are moderately obese have a 30 percent higher risk of GERD compared to normal weight children, according to a Kaiser Permanente study published online in the International Journal of Pediatric Obesity.

Phase II trial results of TB-402 presented at International Congress on Thrombosis

BioInvent International AB and ThromboGenics NV announce that the positive results from a Phase II trial of TB-402 (Anti-Factor VIII antibody) were presented at the 21st International Congress on Thrombosis in Milan, Italy yesterday. TB-402 is a novel, long acting anticoagulant that is being developed as a single injection for the prevention of venous thromboembolism following orthopaedic surgery.

DGP/tTG Screen assay may be best initial test for suspected celiac disease: Study

Diagnosis of celiac disease is based on a characteristic enteropathy in an intestinal biopsy and evidence that these changes are gluten-triggered. The appropriate use of simpler and more accurate tools would add reliability to the diagnosis of celiac disease. Thus, the celiac disease-related serology might have a key role in defining new diagnostic standards for celiac disease.

New method enhances delivery of DNA payloads into cells

Chang Lu and his chemical engineering research group at Virginia Tech have discovered how to "greatly enhance" the delivery of DNA payloads into cells. The description of their work will be featured on the cover of Lab on a Chip (issue 16), the premier journal for researchers in microfluidics.

Promising study may lead to potential new therapeutics for women facing triple-negative breast cancer

Using a small molecule decoy, investigators funded by the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation have managed to block protein interactions and induce epigenetic reprogramming in human and mouse breast cancer cells, essentially changing the gene expression of breast cancer cells to behave in a more normal manner.

HPV DNA testing for precancers and cervical cancers is over 50 per cent more sensitive than cytology testing for the same conditions a community-based study in Mexico has revealed. Results of the largest HPV DNA primary screening study ever to be performed in a Latin American country point to the readiness of HPV DNA testing for large-scale implementation in Mexico and are published online today (8 July 2010) in Cancer, Causes and Controls.

Skandion Clinic selects IBA for installation of particle therapy facility

IBA (Ion Beam Applications S.A.) announced that Skandion Clinic, the clinical centre for proton therapy in Sweden, has selected IBA for the installation of a particle therapy facility. This new center will be managed by a consortium of seven Swedish counties, representing eight university hospitals.

Screening for HPV genotypes 16 and 18 helps detect cervical pre-cancer missed by Pap test

Roche today announced that data from the ATHENA (Addressing THE Need for Advanced HPV Diagnostics) U.S. registration trial of over 47,000 women demonstrate that two human papillomavirus genotypes, HPV 16 and HPV 18, can identify those women with cervical pre-cancer missed by cytologic examination with a Papanicolau (Pap) test.

Early knowledge of HCC response to TACE determines treatment success: Research article

Early knowledge of hepatocellular carcinoma response to transcatheter arterial chemoembolization is crucial for determining treatment success, timing of repeat treatment, and patient prognosis. Currently, magnetic resonance imaging is used 1-3 mo after treatment to evaluate anatomical tumor response, based upon changes in tumor size and contrast-agent enhancement. Alternatively, diffusion-weighted imaging can be used as a functional imaging technique to depict thermally induced motion of water molecules.
