U.S. Supreme Court declines to hear appeals in civil racketeering lawsuit against cigarette manufacturers

The U.S. Supreme Court today declined to hear appeals in the federal government's civil racketeering lawsuit against cigarette manufacturers. Today's decision upholds the trial court's historic verdict that the cigarette manufacturers are racketeers and have engaged in a decades-long conspiracy to deceive the American public and target children with their deadly and addictive products. That verdict is now final and undeniable: The cigarette manufacturers have been found guilty of engaging in a deadly fraud that is unprecedented in our nation's history.

Tranzyme reports positive results from TZP-102 Phase 2 study in diabetic patients with gastroparesis

Tranzyme Pharma announced positive top-line results today from a Phase 2, double-blind, placebo-controlled study evaluating TZP-102 capsules in diabetic patients with gastroparesis, a serious disorder characterized by the inability of the stomach to empty food efficiently. The study achieved a clinically meaningful and statistically significant improvement in critical gastroparesis-related symptoms. All three TZP-102 doses tested were effective, safe and well tolerated.

Under the agreement, Signature Dx obtains a worldwide license to use Affymetrix® microarray technology to develop and commercialize diagnostic and prognostic colorectal cancer (CRC) tests.

LEAPS vaccine technology generates dendritic cells to stimulate immune system to fight viral illnesses

CEL-SCI Corporation and researchers at the Northeastern Ohio Universities Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy (NEOUCOM) jointly announced today that a LEAPS-based vaccine (Ligand Epitope Antigen Presentation System) study has demonstrated the technology's potential using dendritic cells to stimulate the immune system to fight viral illnesses and other diseases.

Study: Statins can reduce risk of prostate cancer recurrence after surgery

Men who use statins to lower their cholesterol are 30 percent less likely to see their prostate cancer come back after surgery compared to men who do not use the drugs, according to researchers at Duke University Medical Center. Researchers also found that higher doses of the drugs were associated with lower risk of recurrence.

Rare human antibodies protect mice from lethal strains of influenza

Scientists have identified a new, highly conserved molecular target on the influenza A virus and demonstrated that human antibodies against this target are protective in animal models of seasonal and highly-pathogenic avian influenza. The work was conducted by researchers at Theraclone Sciences, with collaborators at University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Tokyo and Johns Hopkins University; and is reported this week in the online Early Edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is ranked as one of the top institutions in the annual "Best Places to Work in Academia" list by The Scientist magazine. This is the fifth consecutive year St. Jude made the publication's top 10 list of institutions in the United States. The hospital ranks second in the country behind Princeton University.

MGH, Iacocca Foundation complete Phase I BCG clinical trial in type 1 diabetes

Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and the Iacocca Foundation announce today the completion of the Phase I BCG clinical trial in type 1 diabetes, as well as the submission of all safety reports to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the MGH data safety monitoring boards. Plans for the Phase II clinical study, which will continue the investigation of bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccination as a treatment for people with existing type 1 diabetes, are actively underway.

Bicycling and brisk walking associated with less weight gain in obese, premenopausal women

Bicycling and brisk walking are associated with less weight gain among pre-menopausal women, especially those who are overweight and obese, according to a report in the June 28 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, one of the JAMA/Archives journals. Additionally, the report finds that slower walking does not appear to offer the same benefits as brisk walking.
