New Canadian legislation bans sale of flavoured cigarillos, cigarettes, blunt wraps

Canada's tough new anti-tobacco law, Bill C-32, comes into effect at stores near you on July 5. Retailers will no longer be allowed to sell fruit- and candy-flavoured cigarillos (little cigars), cigarettes, and blunt wraps (rolling papers made of tobacco).

Ovarian transplant procedure increases lifespan, restores fertility in aging mice

Scientists have discovered that when they transplant ovaries from young mice into aging female mice, not only does the procedure make the mice fertile again, but also it rejuvenates their behaviour and increases their lifespan. The question now is: could ovarian transplants in women have the same effect?

Mylan Pharmaceuticals receives FDA final approval for Anastrozole Tablets ANDA

Mylan Inc. today announced that its subsidiary Mylan Pharmaceuticals Inc. has received final approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) for Anastrozole Tablets, 1 mg, the generic version of AstraZeneca's Arimidex® Tablets, a treatment for early breast cancer.

That verdict is now final and undeniable: The cigarette manufacturers have been found guilty of engaging in a deadly fraud that is unprecedented in our nation's history.

Tranzyme reports positive results from TZP-102 Phase 2 study in diabetic patients with gastroparesis

Tranzyme Pharma announced positive top-line results today from a Phase 2, double-blind, placebo-controlled study evaluating TZP-102 capsules in diabetic patients with gastroparesis, a serious disorder characterized by the inability of the stomach to empty food efficiently. The study achieved a clinically meaningful and statistically significant improvement in critical gastroparesis-related symptoms. All three TZP-102 doses tested were effective, safe and well tolerated.

Study: Statins can reduce risk of prostate cancer recurrence after surgery

Men who use statins to lower their cholesterol are 30 percent less likely to see their prostate cancer come back after surgery compared to men who do not use the drugs, according to researchers at Duke University Medical Center. Researchers also found that higher doses of the drugs were associated with lower risk of recurrence.

Rare human antibodies protect mice from lethal strains of influenza

Scientists have identified a new, highly conserved molecular target on the influenza A virus and demonstrated that human antibodies against this target are protective in animal models of seasonal and highly-pathogenic avian influenza. The work was conducted by researchers at Theraclone Sciences, with collaborators at University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Tokyo and Johns Hopkins University; and is reported this week in the online Early Edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is ranked as one of the top institutions in the annual "Best Places to Work in Academia" list by The Scientist magazine. This is the fifth consecutive year St. Jude made the publication's top 10 list of institutions in the United States. The hospital ranks second in the country behind Princeton University.
