AMRI initiates enrollment for Phase I study of ALB-127158 for obesity

AMRI has commenced enrollment for a Phase I study of ALB-127158(a), a novel MCH1 receptor antagonist offering a potential new approach for the treatment of obesity. The announcement was made yesterday during a presentation by AMRI's Dr. Peter Guzzo, director, discovery research and development, at the 6th Obesity and Diabetes Drug Development Summit in Arlington, VA. Preclinical data were also reported.

Shionogi-ViiV Healthcare LLC today announced that it will be progressing its once-daily, unboosted investigational integrase inhibitor, S/GSK1349572 ('572) into Phase III clinical trials. '572 will be the only once-daily, unboosted integrase inhibitor in Phase III clinical development.

Genmab reports Arzerra net sales of DKK 73 million during second-quarter 2010

Genmab A/S announced today that the net sales for Arzerra® (ofatumumab) during the second quarter of 2010 were approximately DKK 73 million (approximately USD 12 million). Arzerra second quarter net sales in the U.S. and the rest of the world were approximately DKK 64 million (approximately USD 10.5 million) and approximately DKK 9 million (approximately USD 1.5 million) respectively.

Researchers develop new way to reduce radiation dose in CT perfusion procedure

Perfusion CT scanning, an emerging imaging technology, got a bad rap last year when a machine set to incorrect radiation levels overdosed hundreds of people in Los Angeles. In the wake of this incident, researchers at the Mayo Clinic, excited by the technology's promise for diagnosing stroke, cancer, and possibly heart disease, have developed a way to reduce the amount of radiation involved in the procedure -- which, when done properly, already involves very little risk.

Researchers find that increase in leptin may promote colorectal neoplasms

Now, for the first time, a collaborative study of researchers at the Sbarro Institute for Cancer Research and Molecular Medicine at Temple University's College of Science and Technology and the Department of Hematology, Oncology and Molecular Medicine, Istituto Superiore di Sanità, Rome, Italy have found that an increase in leptin, a cytokine that is normally increased in obese or overweight individuals, may promote colorectal neoplasms by activating colorectal cancer stem cells.

Results of a new US study published today have looked at whether cleaning products are linked to an increased risk of breast cancer. They appear to show that women who say they used such products in the past are more likely to have breast cancer.

Study finds sepsis 10 times more common and lethal than heart attacks, blood clots

New research from The Methodist Hospital in Houston shows that sepsis is 10 times more common and more lethal than other more well-known surgical complications including heart attacks and blood clots. These results, published today in the Archives of General Surgery, show a greater need for sepsis awareness and early recognition during and after surgery.

By swapping out one specific hydrogen atom for an isotope twice as heavy, researchers have increased the shelf life and detection ability of fluorescent probes that are essential to studying a variety of inflammatory diseases, including cancer and atherosclerosis. Rate of women getting mammography screenings stalls; colorectal cancer screenings remain underused by medicare patients

One-fifth of American women ages 50 to 74 have fallen behind on mammography screenings for breast cancer, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are reporting. Although the percentage of women in this age group who get a regular breast cancer screening every two years increased steadily during the 1990s, the rate has remained just over 80 percent since 2000, according to the centers' Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.
