Phase I/II clinical trials show crizotinib reduces lung cancer tumors

Patients with a specific kind of lung cancer may benefit from a Phase III clinical trial offered by the Moores UCSD Cancer Center. The new drug, crizotinib, under development by Pfizer, showed dramatic results in reducing lung cancer tumors in some patients during Phase I and II clinical trials.

Mice treated with XOMA 052 experiences improvement in measures associated with diabetes: Endocrinology

XOMA Ltd., a leader in the discovery and development of therapeutic antibodies, announced the publication of data from a mouse model of diet-induced obesity in the June, 2010 edition of the journal Endocrinology. The data showed that mice treated with XOMA 052 both prophylactically and therapeutically experienced improvement in measures associated with diabetes and cardiovascular disease including reduction in glycosylated hemoglobin levels, improvement in glucose control, improved beta-cell survival and function, and a reduction in total cholesterol without reduction in high density lipoprotein.

Exposure to chlordecone associated to increased risk of prostate cancer: Researchers

In an article to be published on 21 June 2010 in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, researchers from Inserm (Inserm unit 625 - Research Group on Human and Mammalian Reproduction, University of Rennes 1), the CHU (University Hospital Centre) in Pointe - Pitre (urology department, University of the French West Indies and Guiana) and from the Center for Analytical Research and Technology (University of Li-ge, Belgique), show that exposure to chlordecone (also named Kepone), an organochlorine chemical with well defined estrogenic properties used in the French West Indies until 1993, is associated to a significant increased risk of prostate cancer.

No increased risk of childhood cancer if born near mobile phone stations: Study

There have been concerns regarding increased risk for cancer in children born to mothers who lived near mobile phone stations during their pregnancy after a report of a cluster of childhood cancer cases near such stations. A newly published study in the British Medical Journal refutes such beliefs and has found no link to early childhood cancers and living near mobile phone masts.

A new report reveals that here has been a 10 percent rise in cancer figures from 2006 in Australia. The figure translates to nearly 115,000 Australian cancer cases and 43,700 Australians are expected to die from the disease this year.

Biovest targets mantle cell lymphoma as next indication for BiovaxID

Biovest International, Inc. (Other OTC:BVTI) today announced at the Active Immunotherapeutics Forum in Barcelona, Spain, that the Company is targeting mantle cell lymphoma, in addition to follicular lymphoma, as a next indication for its personalized cancer vaccine, BiovaxID. Regulus Therapeutics, sanofi-aventis partner to develop and commercialize microRNA therapeutics

Regulus Therapeutics Inc. and sanofi-aventis announced today that they have entered into a global, strategic alliance to discover, develop, and commercialize microRNA therapeutics. The alliance represents the largest microRNA partnership formed to date, valued at potentially over $750 million, and includes a $25 million upfront fee, a $10 million future equity investment subject to mutual agreement on company valuation, and annual research support for three years with the option to extend two additional years.

SynCon DNA vaccine shows advantages in magnitude and breadth of immune responses in non-human primates

Inovio Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a leader in the development of therapeutic and preventive vaccines against cancers and infectious diseases, announced today that the peer-reviewed journal Molecular Therapy has published a paper entitled "Comparative Analysis of Immune Responses Induced by Vaccination With SIV Antigens by Recombinant Ad5 Vector or Plasmid DNA in Rhesus Macaques." The paper, co-authored by researchers from Merck, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, and Inovio Pharmaceuticals, notes that significant advances in the design, formulation, and delivery of DNA plasmid-based vaccines have dramatically increased their ability to induce antigen-specific immune responses.

Showing movies in 3-D has produced a box-office bonanza in recent months. Could viewing cell behavior in three dimensions lead to important advances in cancer research? A new study led by Johns Hopkins University engineers indicates it may happen. Looking at cells in 3-D, the team members concluded, yields more accurate information that could help develop drugs to prevent cancer's spread.
