Phase 1 clinical trial of XMT-1107 initiated in patients with refractory advanced solid tumors

Mersana Therapeutics, a platform-based cancer therapeutics company, today announced that it has initiated a Phase 1 clinical trial to study the safety and pharmacokinetics of XMT-1107 in patients with refractory advanced solid tumors. XMT-1107 is a novel anti-angiogenic fumagillin analog that employs Mersana's Fleximer platform. Mersana's XMT-1001, a conjugate of Fleximer and camptothecin, is currently completing a Phase 1 study.

BioWa signs two licensing agreements with GSK

BioWa, Inc. announced today that it has entered into two agreements with GlaxoSmithKline. BioWa and GSK have amended their existing 2007 arrangement in order to provide GSK with extended access to BioWa's POTELLIGENT Technology platform for the research, development and commercialization of their antibody therapeutics with enhanced antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity. The second license agreement provides GSK with access to BioWa's COMPLEGENT Technology for enhancing the complement-dependent cytotoxicity of select GSK therapeutic antibodies.

imec researchers demonstrate biosensors that detect extremely low concentrations of disease markers

Researchers at the nanotechnology research centre imec have demonstrated biosensors based on novel nanostructure geometries that increase the sensitivity and allow to detect extremely low concentrations of specific disease markers. This paves the way to early diagnostics of for example cancer by detecting low densities of cancer markers in human blood samples.

Update on Regulus and sanofi-aventis collaboration

Alnylam Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and Isis Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced today that, as a result of the newly formed alliance Regulus has established with sanofi-aventis, each company will receive a payment of $1.8 million from Regulus. This represents 7.5% of the $25 million upfront payment from sanofi-aventis to Regulus.

This is the result of research undertaken at the University Hospital of Navarre and published in the latest issue of Brachytherapy, journal of the American Society of Brachytherapy.

Educational comic strips can help young girls make better food choices, improve physical fitness: Study

Lively, educational comic strips, geared to 8- to 10-year-old African-American girls, can help these young viewers make better food choices and improve their physical fitness. That's what happened in a preliminary study, reported several years ago, with 78 Internet-savvy African American girls age 8 to 10. Now, the program's creators hope to repeat the study in a larger test with 400 young volunteers and their parents. The scientists also want to develop a version targeted to Hispanic girls.

Folic acid and vitamin B12 lower homocysteine levels in patients who experience heart attack: JAMA

Patients who had experienced a heart attack and lowered their blood homocysteine levels with folic acid and vitamin B12 supplementation did not have an associated lower risk of heart attack, coronary death or stroke, according to a study in the June 23/30 issue of JAMA. However, the researchers did find that folic acid supplementation did not increase the risk of cancer, which has been speculated.

Misperceptions about 'light,' 'low,' 'mild' cigarettes

Today, new legislation will go into effect surrounding the ban of word descriptors such as "light," "low," and "mild" on all packaging and advertising of existing cigarettes and smokeless products. However, a new survey, sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) Consumer Healthcare, shows that many smokers will choose the cigarettes in lighter-colored packaging because they incorrectly believe these cigarettes would be less harmful to their health or make it easier to quit smoking.

The firestorm that followed the November 2009 release of guidelines that would have reduced use of screening mammograms in women aged 40 to 49 highlights challenges for implementing the findings of comparative effectiveness research, according to a new analysis. Meeting such challenges - which may become more common due to increased funding for CER - requires better communication to the public and stakeholders about evidence and its connection to health care quality and efficiency.

Excessive, uncontrolled vascular growth leads to development of cavernomas: Researchers

Benign vascular malformations known as cavernomas can occur in many tissues of the body. These abnormalities are characterized by enlarged, instable and unstructured blood vessels. Cavernomas of medical relevance are primarily those of the brain, which develop approximately in one out of two hundred people. In the brain, such growths often remain unnoticed and are typically found by chance in MRI scans. If they grow larger, they often cause unspecific symptoms such as headaches or dizziness.
