Cell Therapeutics, Inc. today announced that it met with and received feedback from the rapporteurs and the European Medicines Agency's medical reviewers regarding a proposed filing of a Marketing Authorization Application for pixantrone in the European Union to treat relapsed/refractory aggressive non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

New in vitro study results of Hydrofiber dressing to be presented at SAWC/WHS 2010

Clues to molecular markers on breast tumors that may predict spread of lymph node cancer

Predicting breast cancer spread from a sentinel lymph node removed during surgery is a hit or miss affair, say researchers: there are still many false negatives, which means the node, when analyzed under a microscope, appears clean of cancer cells, but metastasis can still occur in the patient. The sentinel node is the first lymph node in the axilla that cancer spreads to.

Study: Tobacco company's nicotine pellet can lead to accidental nicotine poisoning in children

A tobacco company's new, dissolvable nicotine pellet--which is being sold as a tobacco product, but which in some cases resembles popular candies--could lead to accidental nicotine poisoning in children, according to a new study from the Harvard School of Public Health, the Northern Ohio Poison Control Center, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration.

Debate continues over prostate cancer screening in Europe

The European Association of Urology reiterated that it does not recommend a mass screening policy in Europe for men who are concerned over prostate cancer, a stance which reflects the position it issued last year regarding prostate cancer screening. "We don't believe that the time has come for mass screening," said EAU Secretary General.

Study evaluates therapeutic effects of FXR and TGR5 agonist in PSC

Results of a study presented today at the International Liver Congress 2010 demonstrate that a dual FXR and TGR5 agonist decreases liver damage and modulates hepatic inflammation and fibrosis in a mouse model of primary sclerosing chlolangitis. In contrast, selective FXR or TGR5 agonists have no beneficial effect.

Surviving cancer is physically and emotionally exhausting. But for many patients, beating the disease itself is just the first hurdle. A second ordeal comes from living with the fungating tumor wounds that accompany various cancers. Aside from the pain they inflict, these wounds often emit a strong and offensive odor. Fitch Ratings sees an active year for new drug applications to be registered to U.S. and European drug regulators considering recent updates to the pharmaceutical industry's late-stage R&D programs. According to Fitch's new Global Pharmaceutical R&D Pipeline report, the Fitch-rated pharmaceutical developers listed in the report plan on submitting marketing applications to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) or the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) during 2010 for approval of 22 novel drug therapies.
