Shionogi Pharma presents data on PSD502 pivotal studies for primary premature ejaculation at 2010 AUA

Shionogi Pharma, Inc., a U.S.-based group company of Shionogi & Co., Ltd., today presented data summarizing the results of two pivotal studies of the investigational new drug PSD502, a topical metered dose spray being developed for the treatment of primary premature ejaculation (PE). These data were presented at the 2010 American Urological Association (AUA) Annual Meeting in San Francisco.

EpiCept provides update on post-approval commitments requested by EMA for Ceplene

EpiCept Corporation today provided an update on the post-approval commitments requested by the European Medicines Agency as part of its marketing authorization for Ceplene (histamine dihydrochloride). Women unaware of their heart disease risk: Report

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare has come up with results of their study funded by the National Heart Foundation that warns Australian women of their heart disease risk. It says that heart disease is the leading killer of Australian women and most women (eight out of ten) think that heart disease kills only “old men”.

Urologists treating patients with suspicious ureteral or kidney lesions now have a tool to help them more effectively make diagnoses. Cook Medical has introduced the BIGopsy Backloading Biopsy Forceps, a device designed and engineered to obtain large renal or ureteral tissue specimens up to 4 mm3 for cancer diagnosis. The larger sample size helps produce biopsy results without the need for repeat tissue-sampling procedures associated with other biopsy devices.

FAIR-HF study: Ferinject improves renal function in patients with CHF and iron deficiency

Results of a subanalysis from the FAIR-HF study demonstrate that correcting iron deficiency with Ferinject (ferric carboxymaltose) can improve renal function in chronic heart failure patients. Ferinject is an intravenous iron product used to treat iron deficiency and iron deficiency anaemia.

An advanced type of cancer radiation is more successful than traditional radiation in avoiding "dry mouth" when treating head and neck cancers, but it is unknown whether the treatment is better or worse at reducing the size of tumors, according to a new comparative effectiveness review funded by HHS' Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

Researchers identify pattern of gene expression in kidney transplant recipients who don't need anti-rejection drugs

Researchers have identified a distinct pattern of gene expression in the largest reported group of kidney transplant recipients who have not rejected the transplant kidneys even though they stopped taking anti-rejection drugs. This finding may help identify other transplant recipients who could safely reduce or end use of immunosuppressive therapy. In 2008, more than 80,000 people in the United States were living with a kidney transplant.

Scientists identify new susceptibility genes in genome-wide association study of nasopharyngeal carcinoma

Scientists from Singapore, China and USA have identified three new susceptibility genes in a genome-wide association study of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). The study, led by the Genome Institute of Singapore (GIS), a biomedical research institute of the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), and the Sun Yat-Sen University Cancer Centre, identified genetic risk factors of NPC that advance the understanding of the important role played by host genetic variation in influencing the susceptibility to this cancer.
