New fluorescent probes improve tumor detection in mice

Building on his Nobel Prize-winning work creating fluorescent proteins that light up the inner workings of cells, a team of researchers led by Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator Roger Tsien, PhD, professor of pharmacology, chemistry and biochemistry at the University of California, San Diego and the Moores UCSD Cancer Center has developed biological probes that can stick to and light up tumors in mice.

Amgen and Centocor Ortho Biotech Products: FDA approves REMS for Aranesp, EPOGEN and PROCRIT ESAs

Amgen Inc. and Centocor Ortho Biotech Products, L.P., today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) for erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs), which include Aranesp® (darbepoetin alfa), EPOGEN® (Epoetin alfa) and PROCRIT® (Epoetin alfa).

Celldex Therapeutics, Inc. today announced that it has received a sublicense income payment of $3 million from TopoTarget A/S as a result of the recent co-development and commercialization agreement between TopoTarget and Spectrum Pharmaceuticals, Inc. for Belinostat, a novel histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor for the treatment of cancer.

Oncolytics Biotech receives U.K. MHRA approval for REOLYSIN combination Phase 3 trial

Oncolytics Biotech Inc. today announced that it has received a letter of approval from the U.K. Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) to conduct its Phase 3 trial examining REOLYSIN in combination with paclitaxel and carboplatin in patients with platinum-refractory head and neck cancers. Overall benefits of HPV vaccination or frequent screening are low for women over 41

The overall potential benefits of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccinations or frequent HPV screenings for women over the age of 41 are low, concludes a new study published online February 15 in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. The study found that the rate of new infections preventable by vaccination declines with age. Furthermore, new infections among women at any age typically do not progress to cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 2 (CIN 2) or CIN 3, the precursors for cervical cancer.

Minority patients more likely to have surgeries at centres handling low numbers of similar procedures

Minority patients in New York City appear less likely than white patients to have surgeries performed by surgeons or at facilities that have handled large numbers of similar procedures in the past, according to a report in the February issue of Archives of Surgery, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.

Over 96% of SIDS cases due to known risk factors

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) continues to be the third leading cause of infant death, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), despite a decline in SIDS that is associated with a rise in safe-sleep practices for newborns and infants. A new study by Barbara M. Ostfeld, PhD and Thomas Hegyi, MD, professors in the Department of Pediatrics at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, has identified that more than 96 percent of infants who died of SIDS were exposed to known risk factors, among them sleeping on their side or stomach, or exposure to tobacco smoke, and that 78 percent of SIDS cases contained multiple risk factors.
