Consumer Reports/The Washington Post: "Many Americans -- and their doctors -- seem to think that better health means more health care, including as many screening tests as possible. But many researchers are questioning that notion, saying that some common screening tests are unproven and can not only waste your time and money but also cause more harm than good."

Encouraging results from Semafore Pharmaceuticals' SF1126 Phase I dose-escalation trial for myeloma

Semafore Pharmaceuticals today reported encouraging data from a Phase I dose-escalation trial of SF1126 in patients with relapsed and refractory myeloma. SF1126 is a novel small molecule inhibitor of phosphoinositide-3-kinase (PI3K) and mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), two key members of the PI3K signaling pathway that is vital to several essential biological processes, such as cell proliferation and survival. PI3K is commonly altered in human cancers, making inhibition of the target attractive for cancer therapy.

Pixantrone demonstrates substantial reduction in cardiac cell toxicity compared to anthracyclines

Cell Therapeutics, Inc. announced today an abstract to be published online at the journal Blood website by M. Hacker, et al. demonstrating significant reduction in cardiac cell toxicity with pixantrone compared to currently marketed anthracyclines. The authors conclude that the reduction is due to pixantrone's inability to generate toxic drug iron complexes and reduced propensity to generate oxygen free radicals.
