Grossman Burn Center will be relocating to West Hills Hospital & Medical Center in 2010

Grossman Burn Center, one of the nation's leading burn care facilities, will be relocating from Sherman Oaks Hospital to West Hills Hospital & Medical Center in the first quarter of 2010. The joint announcement was made on Monday, August 31, 2009.

Stock split anounced by United Therapeutics Corporation

United Therapeutics Corporation (Nasdaq: UTHR) announced today that its Board of Directors has approved and declared a stock split. The stock split will be effected in the form of a stock dividend, in which one share of United Therapeutics common stock will be distributed for each share of common stock issued and outstanding (or held in treasury) at the close of business on the record date, September 14, 2009.

New findings on molecular imaging and prostate cancer

A new study published in the September issue of The Journal of Nuclear Medicine shows that positron emission tomography (PET)/computer tomography (CT) scans with the imaging agent choline could detect recurring prostate cancer sooner than conventional imaging technologies in some patients who have had their prostates surgically removed.

Research on Ewing's sarcoma could lead to drugs for patients who do not respond to chemotherapy

Researchers at Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) at the University of Utah have shed new light on Ewing's sarcoma, an often deadly bone cancer that typically afflicts children and young adults. Their research shows that patients with poor outcomes have tumors with high levels of a protein known as GSTM4, which may suppress the effects of chemotherapy.

Government, medical and community experts to discuss about prevention and detection of viral hepatitis

To address this public health challenge, government, medical and community experts will meet September 10-11 in Washington, D.C. to plan an improved national response to viral hepatitis. The conference "The Dawn of a New Era: Transforming our Domestic Response to Hepatitis B & C" will feature keynote addresses, panel discussions and scientific poster sessions focused on enhancing the prevention and detection of viral hepatitis and improving care for people who are already living with the disease.

T cells influence aggressive immune cells by regulating the chemical environment between cells

University of Michigan scientists say they have uncovered a fundamentally new mechanism that holds in check aggressive immune cells that can attack the body's own cells. The findings open a new avenue of research for future therapies for conditions ranging from autoimmune diseases to organ transplants to cancer.

Nuvo Research's co-operative drug development project with Fraunhofer Institute for developing WF10

Nuvo Research Inc., a Canadian drug development company focused on the research and development of drug products that are delivered to and through the skin using its topical and transdermal drug delivery technologies, and on the development of its immune modulating drug candidate WF10, today announced a co-operative drug development project with the Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology IZI in Leipzig, Germany for the preclinical and clinical development of WF10 as a potential treatment for Allergic Rhinitis.

New ARRA-funded research on white blood cell functioning

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) has provided funding for new research to learn more about how white blood cells work. Jonathan Reichner, PhD, of the department of surgery at Rhode Island Hospital has received a grant from the National Institutes of Health with funding through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Reichner's hope is that the research will lead to new immune-enhancing therapies, with potential implications for improvements in both cancer treatment and controlling inflammation accompanying injury and infection.
