Treating depression: A vital step in cancer recovery

With all of the stresses of today’s modern world, depression is unfortunately becoming a common household word for many people in this country and abroad. During the cold winter months, many also struggle with seasonal depression or “winter blues,” known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Depression can be caused by any number of factors, such as chronic stress, inactivity, hormone or neurotransmitter imbalances, nutritional deficiencies, medication side effects, chronic inflammation, or lack of adequate sunshine exposure, among others.

Matrixx and H.I.G. announce expiration of subsequent offering period

Matrixx Initiatives, Inc. and H.I.G. Capital, LLC, a leading global private investment firm, today announced that the subsequent offering period of the tender offer for all of the outstanding shares of common stock of Matrixx by Wonder Holdings, Inc. ("Wonder") and Wonder Holdings Acquisition Corp., both affiliates of H.I.G. formed for the purpose of acquiring Matrixx, for $8.75 per share in cash, without interest and less any applicable withholding taxes, expired at 11:59 p.m., New York City time, on Thursday, February 17, 2011.

Cases of ventilator-associated pneumonia — the most lethal and among the most common of all hospital-associated infections — dropped by more than 70 percent in Michigan hospitals where medical staff used a simple checklist designed by Johns Hopkins researchers. Such pneumonias kill an estimated 36,000 Americans each year.

Astellas' Protopic receives Health Canada approval for prevention of eczema flares

Astellas Pharma Canada, Inc. has announced that it has received approval from Health Canada for a new indication for its topical eczema therapy, Protopic® (tacrolimus ointment 0.03% and 0.1%). The new indication means that tacrolimus ointment can be prescribed for maintenance therapy to prevent flares and prolong flare free intervals in patients with moderate to severe atopic dermatitis (commonly called eczema).

The study indicates cigarette smoke suppresses a protein that causes the natural death of mucus-producing cells in the airways of bronchitis patients.
