CMS approves Fresenius Medical Care Chronic Kidney Disease Data Registry

The U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) approved the Fresenius Medical Care Chronic Kidney Disease Data Registry, supported by its Acumen applications. As a participating registry in CMS's 2010 Physician Quality Reporting Initiative (PQRI), the approval of the nephrology-specific Acumen applications enables participating nephrologists to report quality outcomes directly to the PQRI program.

Genzyme's suit stays final FDA approval of Watson's generic Renvela ANDA

Watson Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today confirmed that its subsidiary, Watson Laboratories, Inc. filed an Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) seeking approval to market sevelamer carbonate 800mg tablets. Watson's sevelamer carbonate tablet is the generic version of Genzyme's Renvela®. Renvela ® is a phosphate binder indicated for the control of serum phosphorus in patients with chronic kidney disease who are on dialysis.

U.S. Renal Care, Inc., a privately-held leading provider of outpatient dialysis services, today announced that it has entered into definitive agreements with respect to the financing of its cash tender offer to acquire all of the outstanding shares of common stock of Dialysis Corporation of America as contemplated by the debt commitment letter with RBC Capital Markets, dated as of April 13, 2010.

Rockwell Medical's SFP Phase IIb data accepted for presentation at XLVII ERA-EDTA Congress

Cytochroma reports positive Phase 1/2 results for CTAP101 Capsules in non-dialysis CKD patients

Cytochroma today announced positive Phase 1/2 results for CTAP101 Capsules, a product being developed to treat secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) associated with vitamin D insufficiency in non-dialysis chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. The study demonstrated that a single dose of CTAP101 Capsules was safe, effective and well tolerated.

Researchers study how hematopoietic cells react when Epo levels increase

Our body reacts to blood loss by stimulating the production of red blood cells (erythrocytes). The cells of the hematopoietic (blood-forming) system in the bone marrow do so upon receipt of a signal by a hormone called erythropoietin, or Epo for short. This hormone is produced mainly by the kidney that increases the Epo level by up to a thousand-fold as a response to falling oxygen saturation of the blood.
