Keryx Biopharmaceuticals reaches SPA agreement for Phase 3 clinical program for Zerenex

Keryx Biopharmaceuticals, Inc. announced today that it has reached agreement with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regarding a Special Protocol Assessment (SPA) on the design of a Phase 3 clinical program for Zerenex(TM) (ferric citrate), its iron-based phosphate binder for the treatment of elevated serum phosphorous levels, or hyperphosphatemia, in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD).

American Diabetes Association recommends A1C test for diagnosing diabetes and identifying pre-diabetes

The American Diabetes Association's new Clinical Practice Recommendations being published as a supplement to the January issue of Diabetes Care call for the addition of the A1C test as a means of diagnosing diabetes and identifying pre-diabetes. The test has been recommended for years as a measure of how well people are doing to keep their blood glucose levels under control.

Salix Pharmaceuticals sued over alleged kidney damage due to OsmoPrep

Suits were commenced Dec. 23, 2009 in North Carolina for four users who allege kidney damage due to the use of OsmoPrep, a prescription drug used to cleanse the intestines in preparation for a colonoscopy. (Holshouser et al v. Salix Pharmaceuticals, Ltd. and Salix Pharmaceuticals. Inc.)

New CIHI study highlights that Canada needs to retrieve more organs for transplants

The availability of donated organs in Canada rose by more than one-quarter (28%) over the past decade, but this increase is not keeping pace with demand. More than 1,000 Canadians donated organs in 2008, up from 812 in 1999, according to a new study released today by the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI).

Xcorporeal signs asset purchase agreement with National Quality Care and Fresenius USA

Xcorporeal, Inc. (the “Company” or “Xcorporeal”) announced today that on December 14, 2009 it signed an asset purchase agreement (the “Purchase Agreement”) with National Quality Care, Inc. (“NQCI”, and together with the Company, the “Sellers”), and Fresenius USA, Inc.
