Neurocrine Biosciences, Boehringer Ingelheim collaborate to develop GPR119 agonists for Type II diabetes

Neurocrine Biosciences, Inc. announced today that they have established a worldwide collaboration with Boehringer Ingelheim to research and develop small molecule GPR119 agonists for the treatment of Type II diabetes and other indications. The companies will work jointly to identify and advance candidates into pre-clinical development. Boehringer Ingelheim is responsible for the global development and commercialization of potential GPR119 agonist products.

Four out of ten high-risk patients prescribed nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs also received appropriate measures to prevent upper-gastrointestinal problems, but the remainder did not receive adequate protection, according to a study in the June issue of Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics.

Researchers identify peptide that triggers diabetes

Researchers at National Jewish Health and the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus have identified the precise protein fragment, or peptide, that can trigger diabetes in mice. The finding, published in the June 15, 2010, issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, supports an emerging theory about the origins of autoimmunity, and may lead to new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies in humans.

EMD Serono, Inc., an affiliate of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, today announced that they are resuming their Stimuvax (BLP25 liposome vaccine) clinical program in patients with non-small cell lung cancer which includes the Phase III studies, START and INSPIRE. The treatment and enrollment in these studies will restart after approval by the local regulatory authorities and ethics committees.

Management of cardiovascular risk associated with insulin resistance, diabetes, and the metabolic syndrome

Metabolic syndrome often leads to cardiovascular disease (CVD) because of its key components: diabetes, dyslipidemia, and hypertension. New perspectives in type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular risk, and treatment goals

An article published in the May 2010 issue of Postgraduate Medicine highlights the seriousness of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in patients with type 2 diabetes. Cardiovascular disease is the cause of death in > 65% of patients with diabetes, and when complicated by the presence of obesity, the lifetime risk of developing CVD increases to 90%. The inherent problem is that many of the antihyperglycemic medications used to combat high glycated hemoglobin are associated with weight gain and/or hypoglycemia, which negatively affect CVD.

A review of the response to oral anti-diabetes agents in patients with type 2 diabetes

Patients with type 2 diabetes show a progressive decline in glycemic control and receive antidiabetic therapy in order to reach the target glycated hemoglobin level of < 7% set by the American Diabetes Association and the European Association for the Study of Diabetes. An article published in the May 2010 issue of Postgraduate Medicine reviews the effectiveness of oral antidiabetes (OAD) agents in maintaining glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes.

How to obtain appropriate type 2 diabetes control in the first 180 days of treatment initiation

Type 2 diabetes is characterized by unsatisfactory levels of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) for extended periods. An article published in the May 2010 edition of Postgraduate Medicine reports a proposal to shorten the total time spent with uncontrolled hyperglycemia by minimizing the number of steps along the treatment-intensification ladder. In doing so, patients would decrease their exposure to hyperglycemia and potentially improve long-term outcomes.

The merger would be an all stock transaction and closing, among other conditions, would be subject to raising the required funding to complete the proposed merged company's product development program. VIVUS to present data on Qnexa at ENDO meeting

VIVUS, Inc. today announced that data on Qnexa, an investigational drug candidate, will be presented at the Endocrine Society's 92nd Annual Meeting and Expo in San Diego, California. Timothy Garvey, M.D., professor of medicine and chair of the department of nutrition sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a Qnexa investigator, will deliver an oral presentation at the Clinical Trials Symposium on Saturday, June 19, entitled: "Once-Daily, Low-Dose, Controlled-Release Phentermine/Topiramate Demonstrates Significant Improvement in Weight, Related Risk in Overweight/Obese Patients with Comorbidities."

A hormone that helps to regulate blood sugar levels may also influence a person's sensitivity to sweet-tasting foods, according to a new study from researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. They found that blocking the tongue's ability to respond to the hormone known as glucagon decreases the taste system's sensitivity to sweetness.
