USTPO awards Melior Discovery Notice of Allowance for type II diabetes and obesity drug candidate

Melior Discovery, Inc. announced today the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USTPO) has awarded a Notice of Allowance for a broad patent application covering the Company's use of MLR-1023 for, among other things, the treatment of type II diabetes and obesity. The patent will cover use of MLR-1023 for the treatment of type II diabetes, obesity and metabolic syndrome, including its use in combination with other compounds and as a component in other drugs.

Researchers find LEB or EV demonstrates faster rate of healing for larger wounds

Researchers from Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC have found that wound healing after lower extremity bypass or endovascular revascularization demonstrated a more complete and faster rate of healing for larger wounds of more than 2 cm after open bypass. Findings will be presented at the 64th Vascular Annual Meeting presented by the Society for Vascular Surgery, June 10 in Boston.

Columbia completes enrollment in PROCHIEVE 8% Phase III study to reduce preterm birth in short cervix women

Columbia Laboratories, Inc. today announced it completed enrollment in the PREGNANT (PROCHIEVE Extending GestatioN A New Therapy) Study last week. This randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled Phase III clinical study is evaluating the safety and efficacy of PROCHIEVE® 8% (progesterone gel) to reduce the risk of preterm birth in women with a cervical length between 1.0 and 2.0 centimeters as measured by transvaginal ultrasound at mid-pregnancy.

USPTO grants ISCO patent to International Stem Cell's hpSC

International Stem Cell Corporation, www.intlstemcell.com, announced today that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has granted ISCO patent number 7,732,202, the first of several pending patents relating to its development of human parthenogenetic Stem Cells. Human parthenogenetic stem cells are a new type of pluripotent stem cell that allows immune matching to potentially solve critical immune rejection problems, and does not involve the ethical issues that surround the use of fertilized human embryos.

If you think of diabetes onset like an elaborate molecular drama, then a research team led by a La Jolla Institute scientist has unmasked a previously unknown cellular player, which is critical to proper insulin secretion. "Defective insulin secretion is a hallmark of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes," said Catherine Hedrick, Ph.D., a scientist at the La Jolla Institute for Allergy & Immunology, who led the team, which included researchers from the University of Virginia.

Vandetanib extends Progression Free Survival in ZETA phase III study for advanced medullary thyroid cancer

Results from ZETA, a phase III study in patients with advanced medullary thyroid cancer (MTC), showed that treatment with the investigational drug vandetanib significantly extended Progression Free Survival (PFS), the primary endpoint of the study, by demonstrating a 54% reduction in the rate of progression compared to placebo.

Ranibizumab improves vision in patients with visual impairment due to DME: RESTORE study

Results from a new major diabetes eye health study may have the potential to change the way vision loss due to diabetic macular edema, a serious and devastating complication of diabetes, is treated. One year results from the RESTORE study show that 37 per cent of patients treated with ranibizumab only and 43 per cent of those treated with ranibizumab plus laser therapy, had a significant improvement in visual acuity of 10 letters or more on an eye chart, compared to 16 per cent of patients treated with laser alone - the current standard treatment for visual impairment due to DME.
