Sleep apnea increases insulin resistance: Study

Sleep apnea may cause metabolic changes that increase insulin resistance, according to researchers from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. The intermittent hypoxia associated with sleep apnea causes a distinct drop in insulin sensitivity in mice, even though chronic hypoxia, such as that associated with high altitude, did not.

Halozyme announces voluntary HYLENEX product recall

Halozyme Therapeutics, Inc. today announced that Halozyme and Baxter have confirmed the presence of small flake-like glass particles in a limited number of vials of HYLENEX® (hyaluronidase human injection) product at the Baxter manufacturing facility. Earlier today, Halozyme notified the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that it is voluntarily recalling affected lots of 150U HYLENEX product from distribution.

Aeterna Zentaris' AEZS-108 receives orphan medicinal product designation for ovarian cancer in Europe

Aeterna Zentaris Inc. a late-stage drug development company specialized in oncology and endocrinology, today announced that it has received a positive opinion for orphan medicinal product designation from the Committee for Orphan Medicinal Products (COMP) of the European Medicines Agency, for its compound AEZS-108 for the treatment of ovarian cancer. AEZS-108, the Company's doxorubicin targeted conjugate compound, is currently in a Phase 2 trial in advanced ovarian and advanced endometrial cancer in Europe.

Novel internet-based strategy effective in patients with severe prednisone dependent asthma

Patients with severe asthma who use an internet-supported strategy and daily monitoring of exhaled nitric oxide were able to control their asthma with lower overall dosing of oral corticosteroids than patients who underwent usual care, according to research from the Netherlands.

A report from Melbourne University says that Indigenous Australians are six times more likely than other Australians to be blind and more than a third of this population has never had an eye examination. Now a substantial number of optometrists will be sent to remote Aboriginal communities under a $6.5 million federal program.

Tips for cutting back on added sugar

Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Gatorade, and other drinks now come in versions made with "real" sugar as opposed to the often vilified high-fructose corn syrup. New initiative to reduce health inequities

A major new initiative by the University of Maryland aims to eliminate health disparities in the state and extend the impact of health reform. The university's School of Public Health has recruited a team of nationally recognized faculty-researchers who will create action programs to improve primary care and expand public health outreach, so as to reduce the high rates of chronic disease in Maryland's medically underserved communities.
