Scientists are trying to decipher the chemistry of human odor

Each of the 6.7 billion people on Earth has a signature body odor - the chemical counterpart to fingerprints - and scientists are tracking down those odiferous arches, loops, and whorls in the "human odorprint" for purposes ranging from disease diagnosis to crime prevention. That's the topic of an article in the current issue of Chemical & Engineering News, ACS' weekly newsmagazine.

Resveratrol in red grapes offers some protection against diabetes

A naturally produced molecule called resveratrol, found in the skin of red grapes, has been shown to lower insulin levels in mice when injected directly into the brain, even when the animals ate a high-fat diet.

Research to investigate and improve patient adherence to prescription drug therapies

CVS Caremark is sponsoring research to investigate patient adherence to prescription drug therapies and identify ways to increase adherence. Working with researchers from Harvard and Brigham and Women's Hospital, the company expects knowledge gained from the research will help health professionals better understand patient behavior and lead to developing programs that health care providers and pharmacies can use to improve medication adherence and ultimately help improve patient care and medical outcomes by avoiding costly hospital treatment.

Study shows type 2 diabetes patients treated with ACTOplus met experience blood sugar reduction

A study, published online in the journal Current Medical Research and Opinion, showed that a greater percentage of patients with type 2 diabetes treated with the fixed-dose combination ACTOplus met® (pioglitazone HCl and metformin HCl) as initial therapy reached the study goal of hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) of less than or equal to 7 percent compared to either component alone.

Shortage of general surgeons may be linked to higher rate of perforated appendix in rural areas

People who live in rural areas may run a greater risk of having perforated appendix than those in suburban and urban areas, according to a new study out of Dartmouth Medical School, Lebanon, NH. Not having enough general surgeons in rural regions may explain the disparity, according to researchers who presented their findings at the 95th annual Clinical Congress of the American College of Surgeons.
