New McLane Children's video visit program allows patients to connect with doctor from their home

McLane Children's, part of Baylor Scott & White Health, is piloting a new video visit program that allows patients who live far from the hospital to see their physician from the comfort of their own home. The program has successfully completed video visits with patients as far away as West Texas and the Rio Grande Valley.

Risk of hepatobiliary cancer, cardiovascular diseases later in life is higher in women with ICP

In a new study of more than 125,000 pregnant women in Sweden, researchers found that the risk of hepatobiliary cancer and immune-mediated and cardiovascular diseases later in life is higher in women with intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) than in women without this condition.

New study finds that secondhand smoke increases risk of stroke for nonsmokers

Nearly 800,000 people in the U.S. suffer a stroke each year. Stroke is responsible for one out of every 19 deaths in the U.S. and it is a leading cause of disability. A new study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine found that secondhand smoke (SHS) increases the risk of stroke by about 30 percent for nonsmokers.

Diabetes and high blood sugar impose negative effect on cognitive, decision-making skills

MINNEAPOLIS - In just two years, people with type 2 diabetes experienced negative changes in their ability to regulate blood flow in the brain, which was associated with lower scores on tests of cognition skills and their ability to perform their daily activities, according to a new study published in the July 8, 2015, online issue of Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

MGH investigators report that medication could augment benefits of bariatric surgery

New findings about the mechanisms involved - or not involved - in the effects of the most common form of bariatric surgery suggest that combining surgery with a specific type of medication could augment the benefits of the procedure. In a report that has been published online in the journal Endocrinology, Massachusetts General Hospital investigators report that the effects of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) do not utilize neurologic pathways controlled by the serotonin 2C receptor.
