A group of international researchers, led by a research fellow in the Harvard Medical School-affiliated Institute for Aging Research at Hebrew SeniorLife, published a paper today in Cell describing a study aimed at better understanding how inherited genetic differences, or variants, predispose certain individuals to develop diseases such as type 2 diabetes.

American Diabetes Association receives $5M grant for Pathway to Stop Diabetes program

AstraZeneca and Bristol-Myers Squibb Company today announced that the companies' U.S. Diabetes Alliance is providing a three-year grant to the American Diabetes Association's Pathway to Stop Diabetes program. The innovative research initiative provides resources and support for a new generation of diabetes researchers and is designed to generate exciting discoveries through excellence, innovation, collaboration and radical thinking.

New study examines factors that may lead to end stage renal disease

About 33 percent of people with type 2 diabetes suffer kidney damage that progresses to end stage renal disease, at which point they require either dialysis or kidney transplantation. Scientists have thought that this kidney disease is driven by damage to the glomeruli, blood vessels in the kidney, which spill the protein albumin into the urine. Current treatments targeting the resulting "albuminuria" do not prevent kidney failure.

PGC-1α protein found in muscle may contributes to the development of type 2 diabetes later in life

A Montr-al research team led by Jennifer Estall at the IRCM discovered that a protein found in muscle tissue may contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes later in life. The study's results, published in today's printed edition of the scientific journal American Journal of Physiology - Endocrinology and Metabolism, indicate that the protein could be a promising early predictor of increased diabetes risk.

Enteroviruses are pathogenic viruses infecting humans. This group consists of polioviruses, coxsackieviruses, echoviruses and rhinoviruses. Enteroviruses are the most common causes of flu, but they also cause serious symptoms such as heart muscle infections and paralysis. Recently, enteroviruses have been linked with chronic diseases such as diabetes.
