A study in the Journal of Biological Chemistry adds substantially to the story by reporting the discovery of a molecular chain of events in the brains of obese rats that undermined their ability to suppress appetite and to increase calorie burning.

UCSF researchers create first functioning human thymus tissue from embryonic stem cells

Raising hopes for cell-based therapies, UC San Francisco researchers have created the first functioning human thymus tissue from embryonic stem cells, in the laboratory. The researchers showed that, in mice, the tissue can be used to foster the development of white blood cells the body needs to mount healthy immune responses and to prevent harmful autoimmune reactions.

People diagnosed with cancer are more likely to declare bankruptcy

People diagnosed with cancer are more than two-and-a-half times more likely to declare bankruptcy than those without cancer, according to a new study from Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Researchers also found that younger cancer patients had two- to five-fold higher bankruptcy rates compared to older patients, and that overall bankruptcy filings increased as time passed following diagnosis.

Springer, SISDCA partner to publish scientific journal on eating disorders and obesity

Springer and the Italian Society for the Study of Eating Disorders (Societ- Italiana per lo Studio dei Disturbi del Comportamento Alimentare - SISDCA) have agreed to a five-year collaboration to publish the quarterly journal Eating and Weight Disorders - Studies on Anorexia, Bulimia and Obesity, starting in 2013 with Volume 18. As the official journal of SISDCA, it will be available exclusively in electronic format on SpringerLink.
